County survived weekend storm well

The Woods County commissioners had a short ten-minute meeting Tuesday morning approving previous minutes, warrants and claims, road crossing permits for D & B Solutions in District 3 and Chesapeake in District 1, and blanket purchase orders.

They also also approved belly-dump hauling quotes from several local vendors at $95 per load. All vendors were approved, with the commissioners planning to call upon the company closest to their road-work site and who is available. Those approved: Isenbart Farms; Thin Red Line Trucking; Gary Murray, Dennis Schroeder, Litzenberger Construction, Inc.; Biron Shirley and 4S Trucking LCC.

The three commissioners were thankful that Woods County escaped the winter storm with minimal damage. John Smiley said his district experienced five telephone poles snapped; the town of Freedom probably experienced the most impact, losing power for several lengthy periods (five hours per time) and lots of fallen branches. The commissioners reported three to four inches of rainfall in each of their districts.

Shad Bracken, Freedom mayor, said by putting a generator at the sewage lift station and one at “The Store” (food and fuel), Freedom tolerated a five-hour power outage on Sunday and a shorter outage on Monday.

There were a lot of fallen limbs around town, but on Monday many people were out working and volunteering. He said Woods County provided a lot of help also. A fire Monday night about 12 miles south of town in Woodward county burned the home of George Soupene. Previously, Margo Woodard Smith lost her home near Freedom.
