Southern Nazarene got its second straight win of the season with a 89-80 victory over Midwestern State

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene used hot 3-point shooting to get their second straight win of the season with a 89-80 victory over Midwestern State Saturday afternoon.

Callee Mason, Adrienne Berry, Rachel Dorneman, and Kandyce Freeman all scored in double figures, combining for 65 points and 26 rebounds for the Crimson Storm (2-2, 0-2 GAC). Mason tied her career high in scoring with 26 points, she also added a career high nine rebounds, and two assists. She went 7-for-11 from the field and 6-for-10 from beyond the arc. She was also 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Berry had 16 points and four rebounds, as she was 7-for-13 from the floor and 2-for-4 from the 3-point line. Dorneman notched 11 points and added seven rebounds. Freeman scored 12 points and added six rebounds as she went 5-for-9 from the field and 2-for-4 from the free throw line.

Midwestern State (2-3) jumped out to an early 10-4 and were able to push that lead to 18-12 with 7:21 remaining in the second quarter. The Storm would go on an 8-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Mason to tie the game at 20-20 with 5:58 remaining in the second quarter. Both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, putting the score at 34-33 at the end of the first half.

Southern Nazarene shot 43.8 percent in the first half on 14-for-32 shooting. The Storm also made four 3-pointers on eleven attempts. The Mustangs shot 42.9 percent on 12-of-28 shooting. MSU went to the line 10 times, making 8-of-10 free throws. Adrienne Berry led all scorers with nine points in the opening half, she also added one assist and one steal.

The Storm managed to create a 12-point lead, highlighted by a Freeman layup to put the score at 49-37 with 4:52 remaining in the third quarter. The Mustangs fought their way back, ending the quarter on a 17-13 run to put the score at 62-54 in favor of SNU at the end of the third quarter.

SNU built their largest lead of the game in the fourth quarter as they opened the quarter with a 15-5 run, capped by a Berry layup to put the score at 77-59 with 6:01 remaining in regulation. The Mustangs however, didn't want to go away quietly, just as the game looked to be over, MSU put together a 21-8 run highlighted by a Liz Cathcart layup to put the score at 85-80 with 27 seconds remaining in the game. The Storm were sent to the line two times in the final seconds of the game, and both Sidney Carolina and Mason were able to hit 2-for-2 free throws to put the game away for the Crimson Storm.

Southern Nazarene finished the game shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from behind the arc as SNU made 11-of-22 3-pointers. The Storm also outrebounded the Mustangs 39-30 and forced 18 turnovers, getting 21 points off those miscues.
