Southern Nazarene stops a three-match skid with win over Cameron
BETHANY, Okla. (Oct. 12, 2016)— Kaitlyn Vought had a career night as the senior had career-highs with 21 kills and 30 digs in a 3-1 (22-25, 28-26, 25-23, 25-21) win over Cameron Tuesday night.
The senior became just the second player in school history to record at least 20 kills and 30 digs in a single match. Michelle Pape was the only other player to do so and did it five different times. The win also took the Crimson Storm (9-8) off a three-match skid.
Vought also hit a career-high .486 and added a pair of aces as well.Abbey Bell notched her third 30-dig match of the year with right at 30. She also added an ace. McKayla Benner finished with 15 kills and four blocks to go with two aces while McKenna Qualls had 13 kills and two aces. Makenna Hunter also had nine kills. Elyse Berlin had her second 60-assist match of the year, making her the second player in school history to have multiple 60-assist matches in one season. She also notched her eighth double-double of the year with 10 digs.
Hannah Davis also added 12 digs while Bailee Turang had 11. Lexie Matthews also had two blocks.
The Storm as a team had five overall blocks and a season-high 108 digs. It was the first time this season SNU has broke the century mark in digs. Southern Nazarene also added nine aces.
The Storm hit just .060 in the first set with 11 errors. Cameron jumped out to a 5-1 lead, before SNU used a 8-1 run to take a 6-6 lead. The Storm pushed the lead to 14-11, but the Aggies scored three straight to tie it at 14. SNU led 19-17 after a 5-3 run capped by a Qualls kill, but the Aggies scored three straight to lead 20-19. Back-to-back kills by Matthews and Qualls gave SNU a 21-20 lead, but Cameron closed the set on a 5-1 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
There were 15 ties in the second set and neither team had a lead bigger than nine. SNU led 23-20 late in the set and had set-point at 24-22 on a Benner kill. The Aggies tied it up at 24 and the two had ties at 25 and 26 before a kill by Vought made it 27-26 and a Cameron error gave the set to the Storm.
SNU started the third on a 7-2, run, but Cameron creeped back in with a 6-1 run to tie it at eight. The Storm couldn't push a lead to more than four at 13-9 before Cameron used a 9-4 run to take its first lead of the set at 18-17 since 1-0. SNU bounced back with a 6-2 run capped by a Qualls ace to lead 23-20 before a pair of Vought kills gave SNU a 2-1 lead.
The Storm trailed just one time in the final set and that was at 3-2, but never carried a lead bigger than four. SNU broke 20-20 tie with a pair of kills by Hunter and Benner, followed by a CU error to make it 23-20. The Storm led 23-21 before Vought put the match away with back-to-back kills.
