SEARCY, Ark. (Oct. 1, 2016) – The SWOSU Soccer team fell to Harding 2-0 on Saturday morning, making the Bulldogs 6-2-1 and 3-1 in the GAC. The match was between the top-two teams in the Great American Conference and would determine who would take sole possession of first place in the standings.
The first half saw both teams battling, with equal time shared in field position. SWOSU and Harding each had opportunities to score, but neither team managed much in that category throughout the half. It was the Lady Bisons who broke through first when Amelia Grizzell shot and scored the lone goal of the 45 minute session. The teams tied with eight shots attempted a piece, with the advantage going to Harding thanks to the goal. At the intermission, it was HU leading SWOSU 1-0.
The second half was another defensive struggle with both teams. The Bulldogs went through a 10 minute stretch midway through the period where they threatened continuously. From minutes 61 to 71, SWOSU took five of their six second-half shots. Sandra Nabweteme and Ashlyn Collier both took two shots a piece and Kendall Harris added the other in the spurt. HU's goalkeeper was tested, but she collected three saves in the 10-minute burst to keep the shutout alive. Harding added an insurance goal in the 88th minute to extend their lead to 2-0 and put the game out of reach.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to second place in the GAC standings. SWOSU will return to Weatherford to play the next three games at home against conference opponents. SWOSU will be back in action on Thursday, October 6 against Southern Nazarene.
