SE Unable to Hold Off SWOSU in Road Loss

WEATHERFORD, Okla. (Oct. 1, 2016) – Southeastern trailed for just 20 seconds in the entire contest, unfortunately it was the final 20 seconds as the Savage Storm saw its three-game winning streak come to an end in a 37-33 road loss at Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford, Okla.

The loss drops SE to 3-2 overall on the year and in conference play heading into a return home to face Northwestern Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. on Oct. 8 at Paul Laird Field.

Joel Carlos would connect on his fourth field goal of the day with 4:13 to go in the game, hitting from 38 yards out to put Southeastern in front 33-30.

However, the Bulldogs would take 3:53 to go 75 yards on 15 plays with Kenneth Martey scoring from nine yards out to take a 37-33 lead.

CB Cantwell would complete back-to-back passes to Anterric Maxey-Meshilaya for 20 and 10 yards respectively, but his Hail Mary attempt as time expired was knocked down in the endzone and the Storm would fall 37-33.

Carlos had the busiest day of anyone on the field, hitting four field goals, two from 39 yards, one from 38 and another form 26 yards. He connected on one in each quarter of the game.

The defense again forced turnovers, taking the ball away five times, led by Raheem Wilson who had a pair of interceptions and with his second became Southeastern's career leader in interceptions with 17, passing the 16 each by Andrew Knight and Greg Lornes.

Wilson only had a pair of tackles, but also added a blocked kick and three pass breakups.

Nicholas Sierra led the way on defense with nine tackles as well as a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, while Troy Parker added eight stops.

Southeastern finished the game with 347 yards of total offense and were outgained as the Bulldogs finished with 503.

Cantwell finished the day 21-for-36 with a touchdown and a pick, hitting eight different receivers, led by Ronnie Greenwho had five catches for 63 yards.

Maxey-Meshilaya and Steele each had four catches for 45 and 44 yards, respectively, with Steele hauling in the lone TD through the air.

Devlon Wortham led the way on the ground with 90 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown which leaves him 30 yards short of catching Earnest Hunter's career rushing yardage record.

Green would add 31 yards on 12 carries, while James Revada would pick up his first rushing score of the year from a yard out on his only carry.

Brickey Reed would recover a SWOSU fumble on the second play of the game at the SWOSU 35 yardline and six plays later Revada would score form a yard out for a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs would take the ensuing drive 75 yards on seven plays, with Karltrell Henderson going 51 yards for the score to tie the game at 7-7.

Wortham would have the answer eight plays later to end a 61 yard drive with a five yard touchdown to push the lead back to 14-7.

Wilson would snag his first interception on the first play of the following drive, but SE would settle for the first of Carlos' field goals five plays later from 26 yards out for a 17-7 lead.

Wilson struck again four plays into the next drive with his second interception.

The teams traded fruitless possessions heading into the second quarter before Marc Evans hit Matt Farris for a nine yard TD pass to cut SE's lead to 17-14.

Carlos would cap the ensuing drive with a 39 yards field goal to extend the lead back to 20-14 with 7:06 to play in the half.

SWOSU would drive the field again and score on an Evans pass to JR Omigie, but Wilson would block the PAT to leave the score tied at 20-20.

SE would turn the ball over but the defense held and gave the ball back to the Storm offense with 1:17 to go. Cantwell would cap the drive eight plays and 1:05 later when he connected with Steele from 16 yards out for a 27-20 lead, and after forcing a fumble which was recovered by Sierra on the first play fot he next drive that would hold to be the halftime score.

Carlos would make the score 30-20 with a 39 yard field goal with 11:00 to go in the third, but SWOSU's Tyler Peterson would hit from 37 yards out as time expired on the third quarter to close the gap back to 30-23.

DJ Jones would tie the game at 30-30 with a 20-yard catch from Evans with 9:26 to play in the fourth.
