Ladybugs softball season comes to a close against Perry at Regionals

PERKINS – The Alva High School Ladybugs rallied in the top of the seventh against the Perry Lady Maroons in the elimination round on Friday to take the game into extra innings, but a final run from the Maroons ended the Ladybugs' season 9-10.

The Alva Ladybugs had a strong start to the Class 3A Regional Softball Tournament in Perkins as they had little resistance taking down the Chisholm Lady Longhorns on Thursday, but their big test came against No. 2 of Class 3A Perkin-Tryon Lady Demons. The Lady Demons dominated on their home field, taking down Perry 14-3 before cruising to a 0-12 victory over Alva allowing only two hits for the Ladybugs.

That loss put Alva in the elimination round with Perry on Friday with the start of the game coming at noon, as Perry had to come out of the losers' bracket to eliminate Chisholm with their second loss of the regional tournament.

The Ladybugs were the first to get a run on the board, with two runners on base, Lexie Shafer hit a double fly ball out to center field to score Payton Jones and Karson Henke (courtesy runner for Ally Riley) to get a 2-0 lead over the Maroons.

That lead was short lived as Perry answered back, plating five across home before Alva took down their next three hitters off a 6-3 putout from Jones to Shafer, a popout to third baseman Bianca Ruiz, and a strikeout pitch from Camryn Wren.

Perry plated one in the second and two more in the fourth before Alva answered in the top of the fifth to cut that lead in half 4-8.

With the Lady Maroons ahead by five runs with the score at 4-9, the Alva Ladybugs battled big in the top of the seventh as Hannah O'Neil go the first run of the innings off a single fly ball to right field for Allison Seevers. Alva's Cathy Mapes later brought in two more runners off a double fly ball to left field to trail Perry by two, 7-9.

Alva plated two more runners to tie the game and force the Maroons to bat in the bottom half of the seventh before taking the game into extra innings.

Unfortunately, Perry made quick work of the Ladybugs in the top of the eighth as Alva batters went three-up and three-down, giving the Lady Maroons a chance at bat.

Two hard ground balls hit perfectly past shortstop is what did it for Perry as they scored a runner from third to get the 9-10 win over Alva and a chance in the Regional Championship.
