Patchwork Friends OHCE group learns how to be safe from hackers

The Patchwork Friends OHCE group met for its regular meeting Aug. 11 at the home of JoAnne Prewett. Maureen Thomas called the meeting to order and led the group in the flag salute. Prewett gave the devotions from “Streams in the Desert.” Roll call was answered to “Are you computer savvy?” Those answering were Liz Kinzie, Dottie Gatz, Doris White, Dee Mason, Aleta Nolan, Prewett, Janice Litton, Barbara Cue and Maureen Thomas. Pennies for friendship and nickels for leadership were collected.

Several members showed their completed fair entries for the upcoming Woods County Fair. Prewett reported from the fair kitchen meeting that each OHCE member was to make a pie for the fair kitchen. The fair kitchen schedule was reviewed and Patchwork Friends will be working Thursday night 6-9 p.m. We are still looking for a group to help. Noon workers are needed and Gatz volunteered to help on Friday. A kitchen workday on Tuesday before the fair will be held and Gatz volunteered.

The lesson “Am I Safe from a Hacker” was given by Gatz. She gave the members a handout and told the group how important your password can be. It should have 12 letters and characters. Any device that has Wi-Fi or internet connectivity is at risk including smartphones, smart TVs, tablets, wireless routers and computers. This lesson presentation was attended by Gatz, Prewett and White.

No other business, the meeting adjourned. Prewett served a strawberry dessert. The next meeting will be at the home of Kinzie on Sept. 15.
