  • We need a hero

    Darin Kearns, Alva Friends Church|Dec 14, 2018

Psalm 34:18 (NLT): “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” I received a disheartening phone call this week from someone very important to me. She was in a very dark place; lower than I’ve ever seen from her. She is normally a very strong person, but she was not able to pull herself up from the pit she was in. Alone! That was what she was saying, “I am so alone.” This person works as a crisis counselor for people who are at their lowest: people who are suicidal. I’ll tell you that if I did her job...

  • Spiritually Speaking

    W. Jay Tyree, College Hill Church of Christ|Dec 14, 2018

One of the problems with being a Bible Thumper is having to watch TV commercials that unwittingly push your “that ain’t right” button. The other day, I was triggered by the tag line on the new Honda commercial – mind you, I drive a Honda and love my comfortable car. The commercial in question boldly claims, “Sometimes a present must be earned.” Paul, who admittedly never drove a Honda, would disagree. Though it is a bit difficult to trace the ministry of Paul to exact dates and times, it seems likely that he, along with Barnabas, visited the ci...

With no announcement, Oklahoma jails are beginning to collect DNA from individuals arrested on felony charges – the first step in implementing a controversial state law passed two years ago. So far, hundreds of jail inmates have had the insides of their cheeks swabbed, and the samples have been forwarded to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, which soon will analyze and upload the genetic profiles to a national FBI database. The goal is to connect arrestees to unsolved crimes, which could lead to additional charges. Oklahoma County c...

  • Safe at home-dwellers

    Arden Chaffee|Dec 14, 2018

Thousands of Americans reach retirement age each year. Many of them plan to “age in place.” If that brings up connotations of grab bars, toilet seat risers and access ramps, you’re not alone. Anyone who plans to stay in their current location needs to do their homework, making the space more comfortable, convenient and safe. These are not unreasonable goals for home-dwellers of any age. AARP says that by the year 2035, one in five Americans will be over the age of 65 and 90 percent of them...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Dec 14, 2018

According to several studies of American spending habits, many people in the United States are drowning in debt. They apparently don’t need any encouragement from the government to spend money they don’t have. One would think that perhaps government officials would assist people in saving money rather than spending it. But that is obviously not the case. It is, of course, crucial to our economy that people spend money. But, unfortunately, saving some of their money is something that many peo...
