STILLWATER, Okla. – Many people don’t give a second thought to drinking several glasses of water during the hot summer months. However, it is just as important to stay hydrated in the wintertime, too. “People don’t realize body fluid losses can be as dangerous in the winter as they are in the heat of the summer due to high rates of energy expenditure, heavy clothing and increased urine output,” said Janice Hermann, Oklahoma State University Extension nutrition specialist. “During the summer, the sweat on your skin is a visual cue you’re losi...
Last Tuesday night, Stan Bixler, Ed Sutter, and Todd Holder met at Northwest Tech for the Avard Regional Rail Park Authority meeting. Allan Poe and Bob Firth were unable to join, but Neal Williams, the Woods County Economic Development Committee director, and Sonja Williams, former WCEDC director, were present. After approving the last special meeting and regular meeting minutes, the group decided there was no need to convene in an executive session. There wasn't anything to discuss on the next agenda item of infrastructure expansion, so...
According to ShiAnne Farris, "It's okay to be stubborn and it's okay to change your mind." Starting out, she did not know exactly what she wanted to do when she grew up, but Northwest Technology Center, and those around her, helped her find her path. Farris did not have much exposure to the medical field as a young person, but she knew she wanted to work in the health field. The Health Careers program at NWTC was just the place to get started. Before graduating from Alva High School in 2009,...

Six were Covid-19 cases. That ninth patient was actually in the emergency room where he had been held for the last 24 hours. He needed a higher level of care, but so far the hospital had been unable to find a...
Jack Staats was approved Tuesday to fill the vacancy on the Woods County Economic Development Committee (WCEDC). He will serve the remainder of the term left vacant when Allan Poe moved out of the county. At the previous meeting in September, Poe’s resignation was announced. Usually the person leaving the committee names someone willing to fill that position. When Poe suggested Staats, there was a question about how many committee members were required to be from different areas of the county. Poe lived in Waynoka and worked in Alva. Staats i...

Growing up on a small farm, Andy and his dad worked some long hours together. But sometimes they just relaxed, “sittin,’ spittin’ and whittlin’,” as his dad called it. Those times were more than the obvious conveyed by the name. Dad used them to teach his son tidbits of wisdom. To illustrate his point, Dad would often tell a story. “There will always be someone in your life to tell you what you can’t do … even while you are doing it,” was followed by the story below. “An old Alabama farmer ente...
My brother the conspiracy theorist says when you have major events like the Super Bowl everyone is watching them and not the lawmakers. This is when laws and bills are passed that do not benefit the American people. I am going to join him on his theory right now. The Covid-19 is real. The election may or may not be tainted depending on which news channel you watch. Both are taking up most of the national news space. News about what our lawmakers are doing is strangely silent. It will take someon...

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Freshman star Cade Cunningham hit a contested 3-pointer with 9.8 seconds left and Oklahoma State edged Wichita State 67-64 on Saturday. After Morris Udeze tied it on two free throws with 34 seconds left, Cunningham, a 6-foot-8 preseason All-Ameircan, dribbled the clock down at the top of the key. He worked toward the left wing, took a jab step to get his defender off-balance and hit the winner over the lunging 6-foot-5 Dexter Dennis. Dennis missed a contest 3-pointer from beyond the top of the key as time ran out. Isaac Lik...
