My church and I have recently celebrated the Advent season in preparation for the Christmas celebration. If you don’t know what Advent is, that’s all right; that shouldn’t matter. To put it simply, it’s an ancient church tradition that believers engage in to prepare our hearts, minds and attitudes to properly appreciate and celebrate the birth of our Savior. We do that by focusing on a different word every Sunday. The first Sunday was the word “HOPE” and while the celebration is now behind us,...
We will be reading Paul’s epistles from Ephesians through Philemon this week. Paul was always an encourager, a teacher, a man of prayer, and wished for all to be obedient Christians. He wrote to correct problems in the church and to correct false teachers. He always wrote with love. Paul encourages people to walk worthy, to walk in love, and to walk in wisdom. It matters how we walk. John tells us to walk in the light. Our walk is our life. Live worthy, in love, with wisdom. Then Paul says to stand firm. His education in the Jewish laws and t...

Anti-vaccination is nothing new. In 1796 when Edward Jenner developed the smallpox vaccine that helped to eliminate the disease worldwide, mandatory vaccination laws were passed in England, leading to the first anti-vaccine protests. According to an article in The American Legion Magazine, polio vaccinations in the ‘50s led to contamination by one pharmaceutical company and 70,000 mild cases of the disease. The Covid vaccine does not contain attenuated (deactivated) virus as did polio v...
As we noted last week, a Pennsylvania man a few years ago had 26 “first” names to go along with his last name (or surname). He usually identified himself by using just two of his given names: Hubert Blaine. His last name was Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff. One of his sons was also named Hubert Blaine Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff, so – as if their names weren’t long enough already – they got to append “Sr.” and “Jr.” to their monikers to distinguish one from the other! Hubert Bla...

The Alva Ladybugs took on the South Barber Lady Chieftains in the first round of the Alva-NWOSU Shootout Thursday afternoon. The Ladybugs jumped out to an early lead and dominated the game, winning 56-10. Since the Alva JV was also playing in the tournament, Coach Kris Gore had only eight players suited up for this game. All of them managed to get on the scoreboard. The Ladybugs opened the game with a 6-0 run on baskets by Brooke Perez and Chloe Durkee plus a couple of free throws from Perez....
Coach Shane Feely was able to rotate players in and out of the game with Blackwell Tuesday night to give the younger athletes some experience. As the quarter wound down, the Goldbugs led 12-4. Kyler Penco sank a three from the right corner at the buzzer to Alva up 15-4. In the second period, Alva seemed to...
