  • Beyond all expectations

Rev. Katie Hill, Pastor at First United Methodist Church|Dec 2, 2022

The people of Israel had been waiting a long time. They had endured war, famine, oppression and exile. They had been overrun by foreign nations that turned them from citizens into subjects. But they had never lost hope. They knew the promises God had made. He had promised to save, to redeem, to restore. He had promised to make everything right. And the people were expecting God to keep his promise. They were waiting for God to show up. They were expecting a king. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made...

  • Tempted and tried, part 2

Minister Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Dec 2, 2022

As we talked about last week, we all have our temptations and trials that we go through, and we might ask ourselves, “How am I to escape or overcome them?” In the Holy Scriptures, we know that we are encouraged to overcome our sins and temptations, but how does that work? Last week we discussed that, one way to escape or overcome was to be in the Holy Scriptures of the Lord. By doing this, it brings us closer to Him and strengthens our faith by knowing exactly what the Lord wants us to do, and then living up to His will or teachings. This wee...

  • Fiery phenomenon

    Arden Chaffee|Dec 2, 2022

Tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanoes are threats to life. We haven’t experienced all of them at the same time in the same place, but recent volcanic activity makes us aware that in this less-than-perfect world, things happen. Volcanoes are found on all the continents except Australia. National Geographic photography has captured their splendor throughout the world and most recently Mauna Loa in Hawaii. Current news updates report that homes are being threatened, roads destroyed, a...

  • Ramblings of a Redneck Farmer

    Doug Little|Dec 2, 2022

What is your worth? I don’t necessarily mean a dollar amount. I mean what are you worth? What are you worth to others? What are you worth to your friends and neighbors? What are you worth to your community? What are you worth to God? The older I get, the more worth I find in most everything: The old pictures that I crave to see. The people I am around. The old 8N Ford tractor and its little two bottom moldboard plow. The 45-year-old pickup that has a little rust on it. The old cow who looks like she is 30 years old, but she still weans you a g...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Dec 2, 2022

When I was in my early 20s, I got a job as an insurance agent who went to people’s homes to collect their payments for their policies. My insurance route included four towns of several thousand people (including my hometown). The town where I worked on Wednesdays was about 40 miles from where I lived with my parents. I was working one Wednesday and I did not feel well. I would say that I had flu-like symptoms. I was in the living room of a nice elderly woman collecting her premiums, and she t...

  • Ladybugs open season with win over Chisholm

    Marione Martin|Dec 2, 2022

Despite having only one senior on the team, the Alva Ladybugs opened their season at home with a 37-31 win over the Chisholm Lady Longhorns. Although they have a new coach in Aly Seng, the Lady Longhorns are heavy on seniors this year. That wasn't enough of an edge as the youthful Ladybugs led throughout the game except a one-point deficit in the third and a short-lived tie in the final quarter. First Quarter Sophomore Lakin Gaddy put the Ladybugs on the scoreboard first with a layup followed by...

  • Jaguars visit Lions in matchup of young, improving teams

    DAVE HOGG|Dec 2, 2022

DETROIT (AP) — Normally, a December matchup between 4-7 teams wouldn't get much attention. The Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars, though, might be worth a watch on Sunday. The young teams are playing much better than they did during terrible starts to the season. At the end of October, the Lions were 1-6, but they started November with wins over the Packers, Bears and Giants — the last two on the road — before taking Buffalo to the final play in a 28-25 Thanksgiving Day loss. The Jaguars finished October at 2-6, but beat the Raiders at ho...

  • Kansas sees taxes fall 5.3% short of expections in November

    Dec 2, 2022

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas collected 5.3% less in taxes than expected in November, the first time in more than two years that its collections have fallen short of the state's monthly target. The shortfall was $36 million, but the state Department of Revenue's report Thursday came only three weeks after state officials and university economists revised the revenue projections to make them more optimistic. The new fiscal forecast predicted Kansas would collect $678 million in general tax revenues in November, and it took in $642 million. That w...

  • Kansas justice chides state law school for 'closed' climate

    JOHN HANNA|Dec 2, 2022

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A member of Kansas' highest court has resigned in protest from a part-time teaching job at a state law school following what he says was an unsuccessful attempt by the university to pressure students into canceling an event featuring a leader of a group that opposes LGBTQ rights. State Supreme Court Justice Caleb Stegall's protest last week came amid ongoing and often contentious national debates over free speech on college campuses, what's taught in college and in K-12 classrooms and what materials and programs libraries sh...

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A New Hampshire man is accused of posting a fake Craigslist ad for a free trailer with a legislative candidate's number on the day of the election, later telling investigators he meant it to be a joke after a flood of unwanted calls and texts jammed up the candidate's cellphone. Michael Drouin, 30, of Merrimack, was indicted on a felony charge of interference with election communications, the state attorney general's office said Wednesday. The charge is related to an April 2021 special election in Merrimack to replace R...

    KEVIN FREKING and JOSH FUNK|Dec 2, 2022

WASHINGTON (AP) — Legislation to avert what could have been an economically ruinous freight rail strike won final approval in Congress on Thursday as lawmakers responded quickly to President Joe Biden's call for federal intervention in a long-running labor dispute. The Senate passed a bill to bind rail companies and workers to a proposed settlement that was reached between the rail companies and union leaders in September. That settlement had been rejected by four of the 12 unions involved, creating the possibility of a strike beginning Dec. 9....

  • Trump probe: Court halts Mar-a-Lago special master review

    ERIC TUCKER|Dec 2, 2022

WASHINGTON (AP) — A unanimous federal appeals court on Thursday ended an independent review of documents seized from former President Donald Trump's Florida estate, removing a hurdle the Justice Department said had delayed its criminal investigation into the retention of top-secret government information. The decision by the three-judge panel represents a significant win for federal prosecutors, clearing the way for them to use as part of their investigation the entire tranche of documents seized during an Aug. 8 FBI search of Mar-a-Lago. It a...
