The Patchwork Friends OHCE group met for their regular meeting on Nov. 13 at the home of Barbara Cue. The Red Hat ladies took a little trip out of town to Kiowa, Kansas, for their monthly outing to dine at the Plum Thicket. The ladies visited and had a very enjoyable lunch. It’s a safety issue. Low water pressure used to be a major issue in the southwest section of Alva. People living in some of the more elevated areas were complaining. The city took several measures including adding a booster pump to improve the situation, but that was years ago. At the Monday, Nov. 21, Alva City Council meeting, City Business Manager Joe Don Dunham said the area is experiencing minor issues with water pressure again. Residents at the Northwest Domestic Crisis Center sign a form giving consent to search when they move into the apartments in Alva. According to court records, on Nov. 17 about 4:30 p.m. Karen Andrews, the manager, contacted the Alva Police Department to request a search. When Assistant Police Chief Ben Orcutt and K9 Officer Patrick Hawley arrived, Andrews took them to an apartment where the door knock was answered by Felicia Ducummon. Five people, four of them juveniles, were hospitalized with injuries following a two-vehicle collision in Major County on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24. The accident occurred at 8:25 p.m. at County Road 42 and County Road 270, one mile west and one mile north of Meno. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), a 16-year-old male driver from Ringwood was westbound on County Road 42 in a 2006 Dodge pickup. Deputies didn’t have to look far to locate a Freedom woman wanted on an arrest warrant. Deputies David Cummings and Adam Honeyman told Woods County Undersheriff Keith Dale they saw Miranda Jo Gilliland near the courtroom of the courthouse. They also said she appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine. Dale told Honeyman there was a current felony warrant for Gilliland for distribution of a controlled dangerous substance within 2,000 feet of a school. He instructed them to arrest her. A fire call led to a child neglect charge being filed against an Alva woman. Bonnie Marie Selvey, 30, of Alva has been charged with felony child neglect. Results of the signage project are beginning to appear around Alva. Signs of a uniform design to help direct people to various locations are going up. This sign is just north of Alva State Bank on Sixth street. Other signs are on Oklahoma Boulevard and U.S. Highway 281 directing travelers to the downtown square.
