  • America on trial, again

    Pastor Nathan Hosier|Nov 15, 2019

This is a devotional that my father submitted to the newspaper when he was pastor at Alva Wesleyan Church. It was from Sept. 18, 1998. What he has to say is similar to what we are going through now. He titled it “America on Trial!” What follows is what my father wrote: “It would be almost impossible to be alive today and not hear some bit of detail about the crisis the president is having. Amid all the accusations and denial I have to ask myself, “What is really going on in our country?” What the president is accused of is reprehens...

  • Spiritually Speaking: Amazing people are still not Messiah

    Dr. W. Jay Tyree|Nov 15, 2019

Once, an octogenarian minister was asked for the secret of framing the perfect sermon. He answered, “tell ‘em what you’re gonna’ tell ‘em; then tell ‘em what you need to tell ‘em; and finish by telling ‘em what you told ‘em.” That pretty well sums up the approach of the writer of Hebrews. Far more than a friendly letter; Hebrews is a sermon, a polemic, a debate; complete, at times, with imagined arguments from those who might shy away from the ultimate conclusion. In the past God spoke to o...

  • Ford vs Ferrari

    Arden Chaffee|Nov 15, 2019

Three great moments in my childhood: John F. Kennedy is elected president, Neil Armstrong walks on the moon, and Ford beats Ferrari at LeMans. From the 1910s when Henry Ford put a Model T in every garage, to the '30s when the flathead V-8 became legendary, Fords have been modified for racing. In 1963, Ford was having success on the NASCAR Circuit but Henry Ford II, known as “the deuce,” wanted a sports car. He approached Enzo Ferrari, known as “Il Commendatore,” with an offer of $10 million...

  • Random Thoughts: Adding a new state – part 3

    Roger Hardaway|Nov 15, 2019

On the last day of October 1864 Congress granted statehood to Nevada, just in time for November’s presidential election. As expected, the voters of the new state gave their Electoral College votes to President Abraham Lincoln, who was running for a second term. A decades-old law required that any territory asking to become a state had to have 60,000 residents. Nevada’s population was not even close to that number. The 1860 census had counted only 6,857 people in the area! And even though Con...
