    The Burlington basketball season kicked off with two great wins against the Drummond Bulldogs on Nov. 1. The Lady Elks started their season winning with a score of 43-30. This team of 11 tight-knit girls are excited to see how their season goes. Leading scorers of the Lady Elks were senior Kelsi Smith with 13 points and sophomore Caitlin Flackman with 18 points.     Burlington School participated in National Red Ribbon Week on Oct. 24 – Oct. 28. Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States. Students showed support by dressing up all week.     The Burlington robotics team competed in game day at the Heartland Best Competition at the Alva Recreation Complex on Oct. 29. This year's theme was "Bet the Farm." Each team's robot had to collect simulated lettuce, tomatoes and corn. Then then they had to plant seeds and run the water.     During the third quarter of 2016, the Alva community rallied behind the senior citizens with an outpouring of funds donated to the Alva Senior Citizen’s Nutrition Center. Alva State Bank matched $1,500, BancCentral matched $676 and Hopeton State Bank matched $5. Together, over $4,000 was raised.     Apparently someone wanted a gate because an Alva resident reported one missing. Kathi Jenlink, who lives on Birch Street in the southeast part of Alva, reported the theft to the Alva Police Department this week. Jenlink told Officer Patrick Hawley she let her dog out in the yard about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, and he came back to the house.     Two vehicles collided at an uncontrolled intersection on Oct. 29 in Alva. The incident occurred at 8:50 p.m. at the intersection of Church Street and Hunt Street. According to the police report by Officer Brian File, Nicholas Wygle, 19, of Alva was driving a 1994 Dodge south on Hunt Street.
