PAWHUSKA – The Alva High School Goldbugs traveled to Pawhuska and focused on setting the tone early in the game as they elected to receive the ball first after winning the coin toss. This past week at Alva High School the students celebrated homecoming. One thing that goes along with the homecoming celebrations is dressing up for the spirit days. For homecoming this year the spirit days were Pajama Day, Alter Ego Day, Generations Day, Favorite TV Character Day, and Black and Gold Day. On Wednesday, Oct. 12, the Alva High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) loaded a bus of 43 students to attend Fields of Faith, hosted by Woodward's FCA at their football field. The Alva High School cafeteria has made different changes allowing students to have more choices at lunch for the same price as a normal lunch. Alva was eligible to have a chef come implement and develop a Cooking for Kids action plan. The chef, Bill Harris, will be coming throughout the year. Alva became eligible when Verleta Eckels and three other cooks went to a Cooking for Kids class. The class was funded by a grant. The first thing chef Harris suggested was the combi-plate. Alva High School supported cancer survivors the week of Oct. 2 – 8. The students were encouraged to show support for cancer survivors by wearing different colors that represent different types of cancer. Monday was purple for pancreatic cancer, Tuesday was grey for brain cancer, Wednesday was orange for leukemia, Thursday was black for melanoma, and Friday was pink for breast cancer. On Saturday, Oct. 8, the Alva High School cheerleaders decorated the high school for homecoming week. The AHS cheerleaders had a lock-in to decorate for homecoming. “We got to the school around 9:30 p.m., and we fully finished decorating at around 4:30 a.m.,” said sophomore cheerleader Landry Gaddy. The cheerleaders had a little help with the decorations from the third-grade class at Longfellow Elementary. On Friday, Oct. 7, the Alva High School one-act crew headed to Fairview to compete in Regionals. On Friday, Oct. 14, the Alva Goldbugs football team played a very close game against the Perry Maroons for Alva's homecoming. On Friday, Oct. 7, the Alva Goldbugs hosted long-time rivals the Chisholm Longhorns. The Bugs and Longhorns vied for the top title, but the Bugs suffered a close loss to the Longhorns at 24-29. Proceeds from the half-time games went to the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to help find cures for breast cancer.
