  • Scary words

Pastor John Clapp, Bible Baptist Church|Oct 18, 2019

Fall has arrived in full force. The cold is on the way, and the leaves will soon turn. Soon we will all be raking the yards. Fall brings a lot of different experiences – football, hayrides and, of course, pumpkin spice on everything. Soon Thanksgiving will be coming. Time certainly moves quickly. Enjoy each moment while you can. One thing that fall brings is Halloween. Scares and candy. I tend to like candy more than the scares. We all enjoy playing pranks and scaring our kids. I did a lot of t...

    Charlotte Selfridge|Oct 18, 2019

Most Sundays at the First Presbyterian Church of Alva, you will find sitting in the pews a creative individual who uses her crocheting talent to bring joy to others. Ida Evans is that gifted woman. For many years, and through many skeins of yarn Evans has created a multitude of prayer shawls for those she feels led to comfort with her gift. The beautifully crocheted shawls are presented to those facing health struggles, the birth of a new baby, or any number of life's challenges and blessings.... Full story

I don’t know if anyone noticed, but the Bugs (dealing with lots of injuries) couldn’t chalk up the W last Friday night, the NW Rangers lost their home game on Saturday, Texas couldn’t quite keep up with OU and the Dallas Cowboys got beat by the NY Jets. Then, in Philosophy class, we were faced with the dilemma of explaining why bad things happen to good people. Go figure! Sometimes, our lectures hit a little too close to home. Preparations for the annual Warmth for Winter campaign have started at College Hill and we are looking forward to anoth...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Oct 18, 2019

Back when the United States was a collection of British colonies, punishment for violators of the law was often harsh. But unless someone committed a terrible crime, punishment often did not mean time spent in jail. If a criminal was, for example, a married man, his family would suffer if he was incarcerated. Moreover, it might fall to society to help take care of his dependents, which would make them a burden on everyone else. The solution to this conundrum was to punish those guilty of minor v...

  • Retirement savings

    Arden Chaffee|Oct 18, 2019

An article in AARP Magazine by Allan Roth is labeled “Saving for Retirement May be Wrong.” It certainly got my attention and here is his rationale. The first statement is so true: “Wealth is not a dollar amount.” When I ask my friends what retirement means to them, they don’t mention cars, boats or second homes.
