The young husband meant it when he told her, “We will, I promise. We’ll go. But honey, right now is a really bad time. The farm needs so much money put into it, we just can’t go right now. But I promise, ONE DAY WE’RE GONNA DO IT.” She sighed softly, but she meant it when she answered, “I understand, I really do.” Years passed and she kept mentioning it, again and again. She knew he desperately needed a break from all the work. But she understood when he would have to tell her things like, “Darl...
It could rain this week, so will all that know a rain dance meet on the courthouse square and put in your best effort. Sometimes small things bother me more than the important things should. Part of growing old, I guess. When Cleo and I go places, dinner is usually fast food, so we don't have to navigate crowded restaurants with the wheelchair. I always ask for dipping sauces, because Cleo loves honey mustard, and will put it on anything not moving on her plate. Lots of places we stop will give...

With his team decimated by injuries, Alva head football coach Dave Foster had to pull out some less-practiced plays for Friday night's game. It seemed to work as the Goldbugs defeated the Blackwell Maroons 44-17 at Ranger Field. With a 1-4 season record, the Goldbugs really needed the win, their first in district play. First Quarter The game began on a high note for Alva. After winning the coin toss, the Maroons elected to receive. But as James Tripp handed off the ball, it came loose, and Alva'...

As a young artist, Sidney Barnett experiences a lot of firsts. Friday at the Graceful Arts Gallery in Alva she had her first video interview. At first, she wasn't sure she could do it. She was extremely nervous. But eventually she spoke about how she began painting. The Woodward artist's work is part of the October exhibit. Unlike the other two featured artists who are experienced watercolorists, Barnett paints in oils. Her paintings include imaginative renditions of the sky, especially at...
Jerry Piper says he grew up in a kind of arts desert educationally. "We had no art in my school system. It was just a small coal mining and farming community. We had no arts whatsoever, and I always wanted to study art," he said. Despite having no art classes in his southern Illinois hometown, he was always drawing a lot and trying to paint. When graduation time arrived, "I was so excited because I thought I was going to get to college and study art finally," Piper said. But that's not the way...
"I can never remember not painting or drawing or something artistic from the time I was very little," says Cynthia Thomas. "I just thought everyone did art. I've always loved it." The Oklahoma artist was in Alva for the First Friday Art Walk kicking off her display in the October exhibit at Graceful Arts Gallery. She has been a watercolorist for 45-plus years. Thomas said her focus on art wavered when she considered college. "I actually enrolled in college thinking I'd be wise to go in as a...
Beating Oklahoma has been a way to get ranked in the Big 12 — which is odd considering how poorly the Sooners have played lately. No. 22 Texas became the third Big 12 team in the last three weeks to defeat Oklahoma on Saturday and end up in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank on Sunday. The Longhorns laid the biggest hurt on the Sooners in Texas' most lopsided victory in the history of the Red River Rivalry. That came a week after unranked TCU blasted Oklahoma to earn a ranking, which was one week after Kansas State won in Norman to do the...
STOCKHOLM (AP) — This year's Nobel Prize in economic sciences has been awarded to former U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke and two other U.S.-based economists. Bernanke, Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig were recognized Monday for their research into the fallout from bank failures. The Nobel panel at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm said the trio's research had shown "why avoiding bank collapses is vital." The panel says that the findings of the three in the early 1980s laid the foundations for regulating f...
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia unleashed a lethal barrage of strikes against multiple Ukrainian cities Monday, smashing civilian targets including downtown Kyiv where at least six people were killed amid burnt-out cars and shattered buildings. The onslaught brought back into focus the grim reality of war after months of easing tensions in the capital. Ukraine's Emergency Service said a total of at least 11 people were killed and 64 were wounded in the morning attacks across Ukraine — the biggest and broadest since the early days of the war. Russia...
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Workers at the site of a major complex of refineries crucial for Iran's massive offshore natural gas field protested Monday over the death of a 22-year-old woman, online videos appeared to show. The demonstrations at Asaluyeh mark the first time the unrest surrounding the death of Mahsa Amini threatened the coffers of Iran's long-sanctioned theocratic government — its oil and gas industry. While it remains unclear if other workers will follow, the protests come as demonstrations rage on in cities, towns and...
WASHINGTON (AP) — After finishing a tour in Afghanistan in 2013, Dionne Williamson felt emotionally numb. More warning signs appeared during several years of subsequent overseas postings. "It's like I lost me somewhere," said Williamson, a Navy lieutenant commander who experienced disorientation, depression, memory loss and chronic exhaustion. "I went to my captain and said, 'Sir, I need help. Something's wrong.'" As the Pentagon seeks to confront spiraling suicide rates in the military ranks, Williamson's experiences shine a light on the r...
