Pastor Brady Marston, Alva Church of the Nazarene|Sep 25, 2020

The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem: “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” [Wisdom, pleasures, folly, toil, advancement, and riches are all meaningless] Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. –Ecclesiastes 1:1-2; 12:13-14 (NIV, with my summary in between) Show your work....

  • Spiritually Speaking

    W. Jay Tyree|Sep 25, 2020

Six short years ago, Lynn Martin posted a picture on the back page of the Review Courier that offended some people. As a result, several local ministers refused to take advantage of Lynn’s invitation to post articles in the Friday edition. The Courier has historically donated column space for such articles, alongside the paper’s ongoing list of churches and meeting times in the Alva area. Being the opportunist that I am, I contacted Lynn and asked permission to publish a weekly column (whether anyone else decided to do so, or not) and Spi...

  • Following directions

    Arden Chaffee|Sep 25, 2020

Following directions is a lifetime skill. For those of a certain age, “close cover before striking” was an early example. It referred to a book of matches that had a flap to cover the package before striking one on a strip of phosphorus at the bottom. Following directions has many benefits. Before the age of GPS and navigation devices, getting to a location was a much greater challenge. One soon discovered that “turn left at the second stoplight” might not include the stoplight where you sta...

No one knows what the future holds and most of us feel powerless during these unique times. However, there is still something you can have control over: taking care of your loved ones. Life insurance would ensure your loved ones would be in a good financ...

  • Random Thoughts

    Roger Hardaway|Sep 25, 2020

Once Ruth Brown began openly supporting racial equality in Bartlesville, city leaders wasted no time plotting to fire her from her job at the town’s public library. For one thing, the city commission replaced the library board (which included several Brown supporters) with members who opposed her activities. Likewise, these new board members argued that some of the library’s materials were promoting a pro-communist (and, therefore, anti-American) agenda. One issue of the city newspaper featured...

Since the city replaced water meters so they can be read from a vehicle driving by, about 300 of the heads have failed. These are not the entire meter but just the head that provides the remote reading. The meters were still recording the amount of water used. Winters and City...

    JOHN TRANCHINA|Sep 25, 2020

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — With Spencer Sanders' status unclear for Saturday's game against West Virginia, it is uncertain who will be at quarterback for No. 15 Oklahoma State in the Big 12 opener for both schools. Will Sanders' right foot injury, which caused him to leave the Cowboys' season-opening 16-7 victory over Tulsa last week late in the first quarter, be healed enough for him to play? Will coach Mike Gundy start true freshman Shane Illingworth, who completed 4-of-5 passes for 74 yards to help lead the comeback victory in the fourth quart...

DENVER (AP) — A lawyer for a man sentenced to death in the 1999 killing of an Oklahoma state trooper urged a Denver federal appeals court on Thursday to throw out a judge's ruling that he was not harmed by mistakes made by his original lawyers at his trial. Kenneth Eugene Barrett was convicted in 2005 in the shooting death of Trooper David "Rocky" Eales during a drug raid at Barrett's home in Sequoyah County. In 2015, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ordered that a hearing be held in eastern Oklahoma federal court to determine if his trial l...

  • Japan's newly minted prime minister steps into UN limelight

    FOSTER KLUG and MARI YAMAGUCHI|Sep 25, 2020

TOKYO (AP) — Considered something of a lightweight on foreign policy issues, Japan's new prime minister has spent much of his career in the shadows, supporting previous leader Shinzo Abe with backroom bureaucratic maneuvers and in largely scripted, sometimes prickly dealings with the media. That will change Saturday morning (Friday afternoon at the United Nations) when Yoshihide Suga makes his very public debut, albeit virtually and in a prerecorded video, at the U.N. General Assembly, the world's premier international gathering of leaders. D...
