MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Skylar Thompson and Alex Delton spent an entire season, then a full offseason, pitching a back-and-forth battle for the starting quarterback job at Kansas State. All along, Bill Snyder said he would play both of them. That finally changed this week. The Wildcats' longtime coach said he would go with Thompson as the clear starter when they take the field Saturday against UTSA. Thompson also has started the first two games, a close win over South Dakota and a blowout loss to Mississippi State, but Delton appeared in b...

Officials say development along Wildcat Creek contributed to the severity of the flooding. Nearly 9 inches of rain (23 centimeters) caused the creek to burst its banks, forcing more than 300 people to evacuate t...
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas panel has ruled that a suburban Kansas City man who is charged with election fraud can remain on the November ballot. The Kansas City Star reports that the state objections board issued its ruling Monday in the case against Adam Thomas, of Olathe. The finding that the Republican candidate for the 26th District House seat can remain on the ballot has nothing to do with his pending court case. BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Davion Taylor might have been great in high school, if he had played in games, rather than just practiced with his team. Hard to really know. The hints of the hybrid linebacker's talent, however, may just be presenting themselves at Colorado this season. As a Seventh-day Adventist, Taylor observed the Sabbath from sundown on Fridays to sundown on Saturdays during his high school days by resting and worshipping. Meaning, he didn't play in Friday night games. So he didn't star at South Pike High in Mississippi and instead h...

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Motorists streamed inland on highways converted to one-way evacuation routes Tuesday as about 1.7 million people in three states were warned to get out of the way of Hurricane Florence, a hair-raising storm taking dead aim at the Carolinas with 140 mph (225 kph) winds and potentially ruinous rains. Florence was expected to blow ashore late Thursday or early Friday, then slow down and wring itself out for days, unloading 1 to 2½ feet (0.3 to 0.6 meters) of rain that could cause flooding well inland and wreak environmental...
The heavy rain expected from Hurricane Florence could flood hog manure pits, coal ash dumps and other industrial sites in North Carolina, creating a noxious witches' brew of waste that might wash into homes and threaten drinking water supplies. Computer models predict more than 3 feet of rain in the eastern part of the state, a fertile low-lying plain veined by brackish rivers with a propensity for escaping their banks. Longtime locals don't have to strain their imaginations to foresee what rain like that can do. It's happened before. In...
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rallied Tuesday as technology companies continued to recover from their recent losses. The approach of Hurricane Florence sent home improvement retailers and gas prices higher. The Department of Energy said it's seeing signs that shipments of oil from Iran are falling as the U.S. prepares to resume sanctions on the Iranian energy industry and pushes other countries to stop buying. Apple climbed a day before it's set to announce new phone designs and other products. Video game companies Activision Blizzard and Take-Tw...
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration moved closer Tuesday to rolling back Obama-era rules reducing oil and gas industry leaks of methane gas, one of the most potent agents of climate change. The agency's move is part of a broad Trump administration effort to undo President Barack Obama's legacy programs to fight c...

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas is criticizing the Trump administration's move to roll back rules intended to reduce methane leaks from oil and gas operations. Balderas, a Democrat, issued a statement Tuesday after the Environmental Protection Agency released a proposed substitute for the Obama-era methane regulations. Balderas has been a vocal critic. He and the attorney general of California sued the Trump administration last summer for delaying rules to reduce methane leaks on federal lands. He c...

The U.S. Geological Survey says each of the earthquakes was recorded Tuesday about 16 miles (27 kilometers) west-southwest of Perry. TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's nuclear chief said Tuesday he hopes Tehran's landmark atomic deal with world powers will survive President Donald Trump withdrawing the U.S. from it, warning the Islamic Republic's program stands ready to build advanced centrifuges and further enrich uranium. In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Ali Akbar Salehi stressed Iran would be guided by "prudence and wisdom" when weighing whether to abandon the deal if European nations fail to protect it from Trump. The U.S. withdrawal from the deal already has...
WASHINGTON (AP) — With a powerful hurricane bearing down on the southeast coast, President Donald Trump on Tuesday turned attention back to the federal government's response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico a year ago, deeming it "incredibly successful" even though a recent federal report found that nearly 3,000 people died. The administration's efforts in Puerto Rico received widespread criticism. But after visiting the island last September, Trump said that Puerto Ricans were fortunate that the storm did not yield a catastrophe akin to t...
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Former Democratic presidential hopeful Martin O'Malley said Tuesday that voters in this year's midterm election want to hear more about "kitchen table" economic issues like health care and college costs than they do about the president. Campaigning on behalf of fellow Democrats in predominantly Republican Arkansas, the former Maryland governor said voters are responding to candidates who want to find ways to bring people together on those issues. O'Malley has been supporting candidates through his political action c...
CHICAGO (AP) — Active shooters with semi-automatic rifles wound and kill twice as many people as those using weapons that don't self-load, although chances of dying if hit in either type of assault are the same, a new analysis shows. Researchers examined FBI data on nearly 250 active shooter incidents in the United States since 2000. Almost 900 people were wounded and 718 were killed. One in four of these attacks involved semi-automatic rifles. These weapons automatically load each bullet after firing although firing requires pulling the t...

The National Transportation Safety Board voted 5-0 on Tuesday to make the recommendations to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has authority to impose regulations. NHTSA wouldn't answer specific questions about the recommendations but said in a statement that it takes a "data-driven, fact-based approach" to vehicle safety and will take...
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple is expected to unveil its biggest and most expensive iPhone on Wednesday as part of a lineup of three new models aimed at widening the product's appeal amid slowing sales growth. Most of the buzz is swirling around a rumored iPhone that is supposed to boast a 6.5-inch OLED screen, up from 5.8 inches on the existing iPhone X. OLED is a step up from traditional LCD technology in offering a display without a backlight, so black is truly black rather than simply dark. If the speculation pans out, the even-bigger iPhone w...
WASHINGTON (AP) — To whip up a monstrous storm like the one chugging for the Carolinas you need a handful of ingredients — and Florence has them all. Warmer than normal sea temperatures to add energy and rain to a storm. Check. A wind pattern that allows a storm to get strong and stay strong. Check. Higher sea levels to make a storm surge worse. Check. A storm covering enormous area, to drench and lash more people. Check. And an unusual combination of other weather systems that are likely to stall Florence when it hits the Carolinas, all...
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The discovery of a black Labrador named Lucy led to the unraveling of a criminal case Monday against an Oregon man who had begun serving a 50-year prison sentence. Joshua Horner, a plumber from the central Oregon town of Redmond, was convicted on April 12, 2017, of sexual abuse of a minor. In the trial, the complainant testified Horner had threatened to shoot her animals if she went to the police about the alleged molestation, and said she saw him shoot her dog and kill it to make his point. Six months after a jury c...
