  • Rest is good for the soul

    Jordan Ealey, Bible Baptist Church|Aug 25, 2023

Rest is important for everyone, but it’s a biblical command for God’s people. This Labor Day, remember that even God took a day to rest from all his labors. The rhythms of work and rest are critical for the care of our souls and our relationship with the one who calls us to rest. God loves people so much that he was willing to leave his place of perfect rest in order to enter into the unrest of this world. Christ, the Lord of the Sabbath, became incarnate, as a man who had “no place to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20), so that his followe...

  • Keeping hope alive

Steve Hamm, College Hill Church of Christ|Aug 25, 2023

How good are we at waiting patiently for some event to occur, such as Christmas or a birthday? How patient are we to see someone we haven’t seen in a long time? Patience is a virtue according to Galatians 5:22 that we should be developing. When we hope for something or to see someone, we must be patient until the time is right for those things to be delivered. Hope is something that can keep a person strong when waiting on something or someone. As Christians, we hope for the eternal life that is promised to us by our Lord Jesus the Christ. T...

  • Barbecue now

    Arden Chaffee|Aug 25, 2023

The Smok-Shak in Ingersol is a local legend and, according to Amanda Foreman in The Wall Street Journal, there are 30,000 BBQ joints in the United States. It’s safe to say that the majority of Americans like barbecue. Barbecue is described as cooking meat with an indirect flame at low temperature over seasoned wood or charcoal, allowing the heated smoke to do the cooking. Pellet smokers are popular and the concept is the same. Grilling is not the same as barbecue. Barbecue is a centuries-old t...

Marti Oyler and attorney Dustin Fredrick spoke while local manager Jay Cooper sat in the audience. When...

  • One image, one face, one American moment: The Donald Trump mug shot

    JONATHAN J. COOPER|Aug 25, 2023

A camera clicks. In a fraction of a second, the shutter opens and then closes, freezing forever the image in front of it. When the camera shutter blinked inside an Atlanta jail on Thursday, it both created and documented a tiny inflection point in American life. Captured for posterity, there was a former president of the United States, for the first time in history, under arrest and captured in the sort of frame more commonly associated with drug dealers or drunken drivers. The trappings of power gone, for that split second. Left behind: an...

  • Fed Chair Powell could signal the likelihood of high rates for longer in closely watched speech

    CHRISTOPHER RUGABER|Aug 25, 2023

JACKSON HOLE, Wyoming (AP) — When Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell delivers a high-profile speech Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, many analysts think he could make one thing clear: That the Fed plans to keep its benchmark interest rate at a peak level for longer than had been expected. Powell isn't likely to say whether the Fed will continue raising rates. But he may signal that any rate cuts are unlikely until well into next year. The central bank has already helped drive inflation down from painfully high levels. But Fed officials have s...

However, U.S. District Judge Drew Tipton in Victoria, Texas, was not expected to rule immediately on the legality of the humanitarian parole program once closing arguments wrap up. A decision could come months down the road. At stake is whether the federal government can continue a program t...

    STEPHEN HAWKINS|Aug 25, 2023

The Big 12 was on the endangered list again two summers ago when the only remaining conference members with national championships set off another round of realignment when they said they were switching leagues. With Texas and Oklahoma going into their final season in the Big 12, the conference is bigger than ever with 14 teams, including BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF making their league debuts. Even more teams – four now in the Pac-12 -- are coming in next year when the Red River rivals join the Southeastern Conference. Until then, the 1...

  • Oklahoma schools head takes aim at Tulsa district. Critics say his motives are politically driven

    SEAN MURPHY|Aug 25, 2023

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — In his first year as head of Oklahoma's public schools, State Superintendent Ryan Walters has taken on what he describes as "radical leftists" indoctrinating students. He has sought to ban certain books from school libraries and gone after efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the classroom. Now, the Republican who has fully embraced so-called culture war issues has a new target in his sights: Tulsa Public Schools, which is Oklahoma's largest school district and has a student body of more than 33,000 s...

The BTK serial killer has been named the "prime suspect" in two unsolved killings — one in Oklahoma and another in Missouri — leading authorities to dig this week near his former Kansas property in Park City, authorities announced Wednesday. Osage County, Oklahoma, Undersheriff Gary Upton told The Associated Press that the investigation into whether Dennis Rader was responsible for additional crimes started with the re-examination last year of the 1976 disappearance of Cynthia Kinney, a 16-year-old cheerleader in Pawhuska. The case, which was i...
