Happy anniversary, Cleo On July 17 we have made it 56 years in holy wedlock. Three things that you need to know to last that long: First, don't worry about how good the neighbor's wife or husband looks. If you steal them away you may find out why their spouse didn't put up a fight. Tend to business at home, and the rewards will be great. Second, nobody is all wrong or all right. Agree to disagree and put up a united front to your family and friends. Last, be flexible. So many young people today...
Today’s article is the follow-up to last week’s article and will focus on finding the positive traits in someone you may not like, aspire to, or that you may even despise. About a month ago, I was homesick for a couple of days, and as I was looking for something to watch on TV, I came across a program I had watched about eight years ago on Madonna, the pop star. Let me be clear from the beginning. I am not a fan of Madonna, I don’t care for her singing or her acting, and from what I know about...
Do this one. (If your spouse is a bit squeamish, then best accomplish this without them being in the kitchen.) Catch a live toad. Fill a large pan with cool water and place the pan on the stove. Put the toad in the pan and then turn the burner on to low heat. The innocent soon-to-be-in-danger toad will sit contentedly in that water, never dreaming that his nice, personal paradise will begin to heat up and his lovely new home will steadily turn into a personal pit of death. He will sit there...
A long table is covered with paint cans, brushes and a work in progress at the Old Man's Gallery. Located on Barnes Avenue at the Bell Hotel, it is a convenient stop during Alva's First Friday Art Walk. Once Warren Little retired and moved into town, he needed a place to store his art and pursue new creations. What used to be a restaurant serving hotel guests and the public provides a convenient space. Warren and wife Beverly live in an apartment in the renovated historic hotel. Warren doesn't...

This year during wheat harvest, the Alva City Council approved a truck route directing grain trucks from the highways to Santa Fe and Mill Streets, avoiding narrower residential streets. Monday night, the council will discuss and take action on a proposal to rescind that ordinance and adopt a new one with a slightly different route. Before addressing the harvest truck route, a public hearing will be held on that specific proposal. Anyone may address the council concerning the proposed route. The...

The Alva Parks and Recreation Board is requesting people to fill out brief surveys about Hatfield Park. As part of the master plan for the park, input is sought about how people use the park and improvements they’d like to see made. These responses will be helpful in grant applications. The city’s grant writer is working on one to be submitted by January. There are two surveys, one for youth and one for the general public. It takes about five minutes to complete online. You can access the survey through the City of Alva website at alv...

BALTIMORE (AP) — Nearly three hours before a mass shooting turned a south Baltimore neighborhood block party into a scene of terror and bloodshed, the city's police department received a call about hundreds of partygoers armed with guns and knives — but on-duty officers decided no police services were required. The decision contributed to a "catastrophic breakdown" in police communication and response during the hours leading up to the July 2 shooting, top city officials said at a city council hearing Thursday evening. Baltimore's troubled hist...
CHICAGO (AP) — An Illinois judge on Friday set a Nov. 6 trial date for a father charged with helping his son obtain a gun license three years before the son allegedly shot dead seven people at a Fourth of July parade in suburban Chicago last year. The father, Robert Crimo Jr., told Judge George Strickland at a hearing in Waukegan — north of Highland Park, where the shooting occurred — that he was waiving his right to a jury trial. That means Strickland will hear evidence and issue verdicts at the end of the bench trial. Earlier this year,...
LONDON (AP) — Agreements that the United Nations and Turkey brokered with Ukraine and Russia to allow food and fertilizer to get from the warring nations to parts of the world where millions are going hungry have eased concerns over global food security. But they face increasing risks. Moscow has ramped up its rhetoric, saying it may not extend the deal that expires Monday unless its demands are met, including ensuring its own agricultural shipments don't face hurdles. The Black Sea Grain Initiative has allowed 32.8 million metric tons (36.2 m...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville is waging an unprecedented campaign to try to change Pentagon abortion policy by holding up hundreds of military nominations and promotions, forcing less experienced leaders into top jobs and raising concerns at the Pentagon about military readiness. Senators in both parties — including Republican Leader Mitch McConnell — have pushed back on Tuberville's blockade, but Tuberville is dug in. He says he won't drop the holds unless majority Democrats allow a vote on the policy. For now, the fight...
PHOENIX (AP) — A dangerous heat wave threatened a wide swath of the Southwest with potentially deadly temperatures in the triple digits on Saturday as some cooling centers extended their hours and emergency rooms prepared to treat more people with heat-related illnesses. "Near record temperatures are expected this weekend!" the National Weather Service in Phoenix warned in a tweet, advising people to follow its safety tips such as drinking plenty of water and checking on relatives and neighbors. "Don't be a statistic!" the weather service in T...
CHICAGO (AP) — The Rev. Jesse Jackson announced Saturday that he will step down as president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, the Chicago-based civil rights group he founded more than 50 years ago. Jackson, 81, announced his resignation during a quiet farewell speech at the organization's annual convention, where the group paid tribute to him with songs, kind words from other Black activists and politicians, and a video montage of Jackson's 1984 and 1988 presidential campaigns. Jackson, who has dealt with several health problems in recent y...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Efforts to deceive the public about voting and elections remain a top concern for state election officials as they dig into preparations for the 2024 election. Misinformation and the emergence of generative artificial intelligence tools to create false and misleading content were cited in interviews with several secretaries of state gathered recently for their national conference. Other top concerns were staffing and the loss of experienced leaders overseeing elections at the local level. The officials were gathered in W...
