What do you consider your true identity? Are you sure? Our society is trying to find their true identity. They go around asking, “Who am I?” I have some great news. You do not have to go around looking for your identity and trying to figure out if you are a male or female. You do not have to try to find your identity (personal worth) in marriage, being single, having a family, work, wealth, pleasure, education, power broker, or in a million avenues that lead to a dead end and sometimes to tot...
Last Wednesday night after devotional, I was helping Crystal Keeler put the finishing touches on her final paper for Comp I. Everything was pretty close to complete, so I had very little to add. Of course, if this particular paper should win the Pulitzer prize, I will expect half the check. Brandon (Mr. Keeler) was in and out of the office, being as patient as possible, until we finally decided to call it quits. That’s when the real fun began. As we were leaving the building, a large frog took advantage of the open door and headed down the hall...
All the planning and preliminary work paid off in hosting the Air Race Classic and the air show. That was the consensus of the discussion at the end of the Alva Airport Commission meeting Monday. April Mills, who spearheaded the effort, brought a nice plaque from the Air Race Classic organization recognizing the Alva Regional Airport as one of the this year’s stops. Had this been a normal race, Mills said, Alva would probably have won the pilots’ vote as best stop. However, weather forced many of the pilot teams to stay overnight in Bea...

No one wants a cancer diagnosis, but if you get one, AARP magazine says you should 1. See a medical specialist and 2. A money manager. The statistics are sobering: cancer patients are 2 ½ times more likely to declare bankruptcy than healthy people and those who do so are 80 percent more likely to die than other cancer patients. The diagnosis is tough and if you’re lucky enough to have insurance, there are deductibles and co-pays that add up. Add in the cost of travel, lost work, at home care ne...
A few weeks ago, I wrote about a woman who gave up a career as a singer in order to become a baseball umpire. As part of that story, I argued that all lives are important and that many of them are extremely interesting. If that is so, I will never run out of ideas for this column! With that in mind, this week I am going to tell you about a man named Lew Wallace. He was born in 1827 and died in early 1905 at the age of 77; he was from Indiana. Wallace was successful in several endeavors during...
