As a kid, world history was fascinating to me. I would hear about world wars, pandemics, the Great Depression, and disasters that swept across nations and around the world. Each time I would study some great and terrible event I would think, “I am so glad that doesn’t happen anymore.” In my mind, our world was too advanced for any of those kinds of catastrophes to happen again. It wasn’t just that they don’t happen, they can’t happen. Then came 2020 and our world was engulfed in a pandemic unlike anything we had seen in a century. We watched...
Persuaded by his two uncles, both veteran state corrections officers, Tommy Thompson applied to work at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in the spring of 2018. He breezed through a six-week training period and was promoted from cadet to officer by late summer. Thompson said he took pride in protecting the public from some of the state’s most notorious prisoners, many of whom are serving out life sentences or facing capital punishment. But the most dangerous part of his workday might have been the 48-mile commute back to his Holdenville home. ...
Resting in the corner of our guest house is an old hoe that my mother used for over 50 years. I guess she didn’t do much leaning on it as it has the original worn and weathered handle. Its blade, narrowed from repeated sharpening, is a reminder of days long past. Today’s horticulture relies more on chemical application than physical labor, so hoeing is becoming a lost art. There is a mini-tiller called an Earthquake, but hoeing is a safe, easy and affordable way to control weeds. There are sev...
While trying to obtain a New Mexico driver’s license, I had run into a problem. I had to figure out how to replace a defective headlight without driving my car. Then the state trooper responsible for giving me the driving exam told me that I could drive the car to get the headlight fixed – even though my old license had expired! The first thought that crossed my mind was that it was a trap. I was afraid that the minute I moved the car the slightest distance, she would write me a ticket. Nev...

2 Samuel tells the story of the reign of King David. David is known as the man after God’s own heart. Throughout his reign David sought the counsel of God before he went into battle. He followed God’s plan into battle and came away victorious over and over. 2 Samuel also tells of treachery and revenge, and blessings. David always accepted God’s will and trusted Him to do what was best. The story of David and Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah show David’s humanity. Even in his failures David admitted his sin and accepted his punishment, aware a...
At the end of a long city council meeting Monday night, Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Hamilton announced her resignation. "First of all I'd like to say how much I've enjoyed serving on this council. I've enjoyed the City of Alva so much, and I love Ward 3 and all the people that are up there in Ward 3, but after a lot of thought and a lot of prayers, I've decided I need to resign my seat here on the city council." As she fought tears, Hamilton said, "I'm not going to do this. You know when you get...

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A federal freeze on most evictions that was enacted last year is scheduled to expire July 31, after the Biden administration extended the date by a month. The moratorium, put in place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in September, has been the only tool keeping millions of tenants in their homes. Many of them lost jobs during the coronavirus pandemic and have fallen months behind on their rent. Landlords successfully challenged the order in court, arguing that they also had bills to pay. They pointed out t...

LARNED, Kan. (AP) — A man has been charged with arson after a large U.S. flag was burned outside a business in Larned, Pawnee County Attorney Douglas McNett said. Jason Wayne Cauble, 37, of Larned, was arrested Tuesday. He made his first court appearance Thursday on the felony arson charge, McNett said in a news release. Investigators said the 30-by-20 foot flag was burned in April at the Carr Auction and Realty Inc. building in Larned. McNett explained that people who burn their own flags are protected by First Amendment free speech rights b...
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The family of a man who died shortly after being released from prison for a killing he did not commit will receive a settlement of more than $800,000. The State Finance Council on Thursday approved the settlement for the family of Olin "Pete" Coones, who spent 12 years in prison before he was exonerated in November. Coones died of cancer in February, 108 days after he was released from prison. The approval comes weeks after a Shawnee County District Court judge signed off on the $826,301 payment at the request of Attorney G...
CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — A woman was charged with allegedly violating a Rhode Island city ordinance against feeding wild animals. The 55-year-old woman's neighbors blame her for exacerbating the rodent problem in Cranston, WJAR-TV reported. Last week, the publication captured several nocturnal rats active in the middle of the day. Neighbors say that it's even worse during the night. The woman and her parents, who own the home, pleaded not guilty Thursday. Outside of the courthouse, she told reporters that she's being charged for feeding fowl b...
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Friday promised Afghanistan's top leaders a "sustained" partnership even as he moves to accelerate winding down the United States' longest war amid escalating Taliban violence. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, chair of the High Council for National Reconciliation, met at the Pentagon with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin before their sit-down with Biden at the White House later in the afternoon. While Biden vowed that the U.S. was committed to assisting Afghanistan, he also insisted t...
SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — With nearly 160 people unaccounted for and at least four dead after a seaside condominium tower collapsed into a smoldering heap of twisted metal and concrete, rescuers used both heavy equipment and their own hands to comb through the wreckage on Friday in an increasingly desperate search for survivors. As scores of firefighters in Surfside, just north of Miami, toiled to locate and reach anyone still alive in the remains of the 12-story Champlain Towers South, hopes rested on how quickly crews using dogs and m...
CHICAGO (AP) — Former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to more than 22 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd. But it's not clear yet what Chauvin's experience will look like. AN UNUSUAL START Since his April conviction, Chauvin has been held at the state's only maximum security prison, in Oak Park Heights. That's unusual — people don't typically go to a prison while waiting for sentencing. Chauvin is there for security reasons. Most state prisons have a unit to separate inmates from the general pop...
