Have you ever noticed how few golfers “of color” are on the PGA tour? Prior to Tiger Woods, the only name that comes to mind is Calvin Peete. He had 12 wins on the tour – which ain’t too shabby – but comes nowhere near Tiger’s amazing career. I’m sure that’s the reason so many were surprised to see just how successful Mr. Woods has become. There are precious few records that he has not broken and, according to the talking heads that think they know, his newly established records may never be tou...

“Live to ride, ride to live.” These words emblazoned on some vanity plates express the feelings of a true motorcyclist. Unfortunately, the danger in riding is real: motorcycles are hard to see and a slight rider bobble can prove fatal. Cars have multiple safety features while motorcycles have few. Disclaimer aside, we who enjoy the sport assume the risk and like golf, the attraction is hard to explain. A friend once commented, “I got over motorcycles years ago.” For me, it’s not so easy. At...

Two years and nine months later, in December 1819 Alabama became a state. Bibb, having won an election held in anticipation of the territory being granted statehood, became Alabama’s first state governor. That made him the first person in American history to be a U.S. senator from one state and the governor of another. That rare feat has...

When I was a kid, my dad sang in a gospel trio with some friends from our church in Colorado Springs. At first, they sang on Sunday mornings and other church events but they eventually ended up singing at other events associated with our larger church organization. This then led to the start of traveling to sing at other churches. By the time they decided to finish this part of their lives, they had sung all over the Midwest with the last tour lasting three months over five states. I have some great memories from that trip; memories I hope I...
