TULSA, Okla. (AP) — President Joe Biden will visit Tulsa next week to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1921 massacre that claimed up to hundreds of lives in the city. The White House said Tuesday that Biden will visit Tulsa on June 1. His appearance will follow a weekend of events including a keynote speech from Stacey Abrams and a performance by John Legend. In 1921, a white mob descended on the Black section of Tulsa, known as Greenwood, and burned 1,000 homes and looted hundreds more. The community has never recovered from the a...
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A woman died after the car she was driving was struck by a stolen pickup truck being pursed by Oklahoma City police. The truck, reported stolen Monday, was tracked by the owner using his telephone, relaying its location to officers who spotted and began pursuing it, according to Capt. Dan Stewart. During the pursuit the truck crashed into a car driven by Starr Shells, 28, who died at a hospital of injuries suffered in the collision. "The other driver (Shells) was not involved, they were just minding their own business," S...

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — On a recent Sunday, Ernestine Alpha Gibbs returned to Vernon African Methodist Episcopal Church. Not her body. She had left this Earth 18 years ago, at age 100. But on this day, three generations of her family brought Ernestine's keepsakes back to this place which meant so much to her. A place that was, like their matriarch, a survivor of a long-ago atrocity. Albums containing black-and-white photos of the grocery business that has employed generations of Gibbses. VHS cassette tapes of Ernestine reflecting on her life. E...
(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.) (THE CONVERSATION) When Viola Fletcher, 107, appeared before Congress in May 2021, she called for the nation to officially acknowledge the Tulsa race riot of 1921. I know that place and year well. As is the case with Fletcher – who is one of the last living survivors of the massacre, which took place when she was 7 – the terror of the Tulsa race riot is something that has been with me for almost as long as I can remember. My gra...

He told the deputy he did not kick the s...
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Two brothers who were sentenced to die in 2002 for four killings known as "the Wichita massacre" are back before the Kansas Supreme Court seeking to have their sentences commuted to life in prison. The court heard arguments Monday from attorneys in the cases of Jonathan and Reginald Carr, The Wichita Eagle reports. Their attorneys continued to argue that their death sentences should be overturned because the two brothers had a joint hearing when jurors considered their punishments. The Kansas court upheld their c...

The investor group is pushing to replace four of the oil giant's board members with executives they say are better suited to both strengthen the company's finances and lead it through the transition to cleaner energy. The fight represents a moment of reckoning for major publicly traded companies to address a global c...
WASHINGTON (AP) — The anniversary of George Floyd's death was supposed to be a milestone moment, a time to mark passage of legislation to "root out systemic racism" in the criminal justice system, in the words of President Joe Biden. Instead, Floyd's family visited Washington on Tuesday to mourn with Biden and prod Congress to act as they commemorate the loss of their brother, father and son one year ago. The routine of Monday morning meetings at the courthouse was interrupted May 24 when someone fell just down the hallway from the Woods County Commissioners’ office. The Tax Roll Corrections Board meeting was halted briefly as several people converged to help. Commissioner David Hamil was on his way to the office when he lost his footing and landed on the concrete floor. Hamil said later he wasn’t sure if he slipped or if his knee just gave way. It happened fast. He was shaken up and bloodied bot...
We’re officially winding down the 2021 legislative session, and with it, we’ve concluded work on the final versions of some very important policy bills that have been in progress throughout the last few months. One of these is Senate Bill 131, which deals with Medicaid expansion in the state. Since the majority of Oklahoma voters passed Medicaid expansion this past June, we are constitutionally required to fund it and implement the expansion. The governor has pushed for managed care companies to...
I gave some details of the state budget in my column last week. This week, I’ll give some additional information of the $8.8 billion the Legislature will appropriate for Fiscal Year 2022, which starts in July. During the pandemic we set aside approximately $17 million from the ROADS Fund to be used on other core state services if needed. This year’s budget restores that funding back to that Department of Transportation fund. The County Improvement for Roads and Bridges Fund also is made who...
(Memorial Day address presented by the author in Barber County, Kansas) We need to remember so history does not repeat itself. Understanding what veterans experienced is very difficult. Sharing compassion, respect and honor is our way of showing our appreciation for their service to our country. Honoring those that lay to rest here and those that are laid to rest on foreign battle grounds is our duty. Let us not forget. Let us not say “I am too busy.” Let us not consider Memorial Day just a holiday. When you celebrate with family and fri...
I have a perfectly good cellphone, but the company announced they’re going to stop providing updates after four years. Other vendors limit updates to three years so I suppose I should feel grateful. I guess if they can’t entice you to buy the newest model, they’ll try another tactic. While I’ve had my current phone for around three years, I still haven’t accessed some of the features. It was only recently that I looked for the flashlight app after stumbling around a room in the dark. I’m still...
