  • Music education: more than just notes

    Karsyn Madrid, AHS Reporter|May 5, 2017

Having music in our schools is very important, whether it be band or vocal. “Music education is important because it gives every child a voice and allows them to grow spiritually, mentally and physically. Music exposes students and the community to other cultures and thoughts and creates well-rounded individuals,” said Alva middle and high school Vocal Director Bryce Lewis. Research shows brain circuits involved in musical improvisation are shaped by efficient training, leading to less reliance on working memory and more extensive con...

They call this a “Thank a Thon.” The students were fed pizza and brownies for their hard work. If the people they called had any questions, the students answered them. • The harmony of cultural diversity

Rev. Harold Henson, Cedar Grove Wesleyan Church|May 5, 2017

Our founding fathers gave us a wonderful gift: a nation that is united, yet separate. Our nation is made up of 50 individual states. Each has its own personality and government. They are unique individuals, yet they are connected by a transcendent entity that is America. Being in Christ is similar to this. We are individuals, yet we are a part of something bigger. Each individual is a part of the Church, which is a transcendent entity, which unites us with people from all over the world. It is this unity in diversity that makes the church...

  • Spiritually Speaking

    W. Jay Tyree, College Hill Church of Christ|May 5, 2017

It’s finals week! By the time you pick up a copy of Friday’s paper, most of the victories and defeats will have been won or lost and students will be hightailing it toward summer jobs and distant adventures. Most of these young scholars will have done an admirable job of completing the semester; however, most of them will have done so with a last-minute surge of strength. It seems that even the best of us like to put things off until the 11th hour. This morning (Friday) at 10, the Jesus and the New Testament class will sit for their final as we...

  • Dirty bombs

    Arden Chaffee|May 5, 2017

Fearful as we are of a nuclear strike by the North Koreans, a more imminent threat lies in the unknown quantities of weapons-grade uranium-235 that can be used to make a “dirty” bomb. Packed with conventional explosives, a small amount of this material could contaminate a neighborhood, doing the expected damage from the explosion, but also exposing the survivors and first responders to life-threatening radiation. The cost to decontaminate a highly populated area is staggering and the dust gen...
