  • One of the saddest days in our state's history

    Jim Scribner|Apr 23, 2023

I know it is a few days late, but please give a minute of your time with silence for the memory of the April 19, 1995, Murrah building bombing. The crushing is going well at the salvage. They are having good luck getting trucks, so things are moving right along. There is a sign for everything today as told by The Five Man Electrical Band in their song "Signs." Some are useful, but the majority are either so dumb you wonder why they are there or meant to replace common sense. At the hospital...

  • About that veto override ...

    Sen. Casey Murdock|Apr 23, 2023

One of the news stories coming out of the Capitol this past week was the Senate’s override of the governor’s veto of Senate Bill 1130, dealing with unused funds within the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA). The Constitution delegates the job of appropriating funds to the Legislature, and that means the final say on the appropriation of these monies is the responsibility of the Senate and House, not the executive branch. I know people may look at the veto override or the current disagreements between the Senate and House on issues rel...

  • The Eccentric Cowboy

    Dal Houston|Apr 23, 2023

One of the topics my clients most like to discuss and ask me about is the economy and my views on whether we are headed for hard times. I don't have any more insight into the economy than anyone else, so I have no clue whether there are good times or bad times ahead, but I do want to share a story that's burned into my psyche about always believing the end is around the next corner. My Grandfather, who I loved and respected with all my might, was 23 years old with a wife and two children at the...

  • Fortune tellers don't even know your name

    Andy and Renie Bowman|Apr 23, 2023

They seem to be everywhere in any town you drive through. Signs promoting the services of a local ‘Tarot Card Reader,’ ‘Fortune Teller,’ and ‘Palm Reader’ seem to be on every block. Look online and there are also the online psychics – the “Call me, and I’ll tell you your future” people. And don’t forget, most newspapers run daily horoscopes that are available to the ‘seekers.’ Evidently the practice of predicting the future has proved to be a lucrative business in our country. But why trust a...

  • Conservation is key at the Lazy KT Ranch

    Apr 23, 2023

Conserving natural resources is top of mind at the Lazy KT Ranch in Freedom on Earth Day and every day. Through the Dust Bowl, severe drought in the 1950s and drought again today, conservation has allowed the ranch to continue. Rose Kline Blunk began reclaiming the land by removing Eastern Red Cedars in the 1990s. Cutting the invasive trees and prescribed fire proved to be effective and soon native grasses began to recover in areas dominated by cedars. In 2012, Rose's daughter, Katie Blunk and...

Greg Highfill, Woods County Extension Educator|Apr 23, 2023

As insurance adjusters tour the area, much of the droughted wheat acreage has been released to producers. Some of these fields have enough standing forage for haying, but most do not. The more efficient method to utilize this standing forage resource is to turn cattle into these fields for grazing. All weights and classes of cattle can benefit from the excellent nutritional value in this forage resource. If beef producers are utilizing graze-out wheat or rye with lactating beef cows, they should not forget to supply adequate mineral nutrition...
