The crusher and tin handler showed this week, and not any too soon. It amazes me how a small yard like mine can generate so much stuff. I have given thought from time to time about quitting. Besides all the projects Cleo has waiting for me, I worry about where all the appliances and junk would go. Not to brag, but it takes a special person to sort all the junk and make a living too. I'm not that special, but I have had the knack for over 40 years. Thanks for letting me be your junkie. To all of...
Until the late 1960s, there was no universal emergency phone number for people to quickly call their local police, fire departments or ambulance service. In 1967, the President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice recommended a single, universal number for reporting an emergency. Within a few years, 911 was being adopted throughout the country. But decades later, we’re in desperate need of an upgrade. The current 911 system is analog technology of the 20th century, but we’re now more than two decades into the 21st...

I often hear people reminisce about the "good old days." Please don't get me wrong – I also reflect on certain periods of my life when things seemed perfectly aligned. But in my more rational moments, I realize there are truly no "good old days" that are universal to everyone. As a young teenager in the 1970s, I worked for my grandfather, who made it clear that he was none too impressed with the present world, and that his "good old days" were the days when horses were the main mode of t...

You and I hear them, the stories of people who insist they are totally innocent of any wrongdoing. Yet they are definitely identified as being at the scene of the crime, in the company of the criminals. How does that happen? Realistically, how often does a person just happen to find themselves in the wrong car, with the thief? Or accidentally standing with the bad guys in a convenience store that is being robbed? How often does a teen or an adult hang out with friends and are totally unaware of...

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Doctors accused of not providing enough care to infants delivered alive during certain kinds of abortion procedures in Kansas could face lawsuits and criminal charges under a bill that won final approval Tuesday in the state's Republican-controlled Legislature. The legislation faces an uncertain fate in a legal and political climate that's made Kansas an outlier on abortion policy among states with GOP-led legislatures.
