ALVA – Even though he’d roped through his youth, Northwestern Oklahoma State University cowboy Trisyn Kalawaia has focused on steer wrestling since he arrived in Alva a couple years ago. His return to team roping was by happenstance. Bennett McComas, a member of the Northwestern women’s team from Temecula, California, was looking for a partner, so Kalawaia stepped up at the first three rodeos of the spring semester. “I borrow a horse, I borrow a rope and I borrow a glove,” said Kalawaia, a senior from Waiakea, Hawaii. “I go out there and t...

(Scripture references: Genesis 1:27, Proverbs 15:15, and 1 Thessalonians 5: 11-22) This last Sunday myself and Rev. Drew Kirtley at Alva First Christian decided to play a joke on our congregations. Drew approached me with this idea back in the fall to surprise our congregations with a secret “pulpit swap.” He thought it would be a perfect “April Fools” joke for the first Sunday of April, and I wholeheartedly agreed! So, this last Sunday we each attended our respective 9:30 a.m. Sunday school groups, and then swapped locations in the minutes...
Shhh! Did you hear that? Shhhhh! Did you hear that? It sounds like music coming from somewhere. I was driving my bus the other day when I heard music coming from somewhere in the back of the bus. I thought I might be hearing someone’s electronic device playing a song, but it was actually the kids singing some new song that this old man didn’t recognize (lol!) and it was so pleasant to hear the voices of these beautiful young people expressing the joy in their hearts in song! Music is a beautiful gift that the Lord has given us to bring enj...

America’s love of the automobile dates back to the early 20th century. The horseless carriage was born, and Henry Ford revolutionized mass production making them affordable to the masses. The number of vehicles in operation has steadily increased from 4,190 in 1900 to 284 million last year. One might think that the increase was due to second or third vehicles, but instead it is due to an increase in the number of households. According to David Harrison in Wall Street Journal, the average n...
Yes, you failed. It ended badly for you – bankruptcy, nervous breakdown, divorce, the loss of any relationship with your kids, or maybe a physical adventure that went sideways and ended in your getting to know the fine folks of your local hospital. Endless possibilities come to mind when it comes to the ways we can lose at life. And the loss doesn’t just stop with the actual thing that happened. Like waves from a rock thrown into a pond, the repercussions just keep spreading. The hurt eng...
I awoke one morning early this week with the knowledge that I had to write a new article. I was having a hard time figuring out what I was going to write about – until I walked through the kitchen and saw a dead houseplant in the sink. I have lost both of my parents over the last few years, and as a result, we have received many houseplants from friends and loved ones to help our family in those sad times. In fact, we received so many that we had a difficult time knowing where to put them all. M...
We are hoarders. Maybe we’re not in the dirty, unlivable sense, but definitely in the keep-everything-because-we-might-use-it-one-day sense. This goes along with old paperwork, especially something with our family’s names on it. We cleaned out a room this week that had needed it for a while. Inside one box was a letter that I had forgotten I had received. Anybody around my age who went to school at Laverne probably remembers Coach Jones. When I found out he was retiring at Burlington several years ago, I wrote him a letter congratulating him...
Ray Caldwell, who pitched in baseball’s major leagues from 1910 through 1921, lived from 1888 until 1967. He played primarily for the New York Yankees before finishing his career with the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians. Caldwell last pitched in the major leagues in September 1921 but he was not yet finished with playing the sport at which he excelled. He played 12 more seasons in the minor leagues, retiring in 1933 at the age of 45! As we saw last week, Caldwell was extremely t...
From the list, there will be plenty to go around. I don't know where to pick them up, but the list is on Facebook and in the Newsgram. One neat thing is people can post pictures of what they have on Facebook. I noticed some of the "professionals" were PMing the owners to get early buys. This was put on by the Little Red Hens. Way to go, girls, and thank you. Alva State Bank did the location sheets, so they did good, too. Back in the day, these early birds had to drive around looking for people w...
