(A portion of an article by Paula Span of the New York Times.) Sue Ellen King had circled her retirement date on the calendar: March 8, 2015. She had worked as a critical care nurse and nursing educator at University of Florida Health (UF Health) in Jacksonville, Florida, for 38 years; co-workers joked that she was there when the hospital's foundation was laid, which happened to be true. So the send-offs went on for days – parties in the units where she had worked, a dinner in her honor, g...
Superintendent Steve Parkhurst told the Alva School Board Monday night that because the Alva district is "off the state formula," the general fund will have to supply $820,000 to fund the pay increases voted by the State Legislature two weeks ago. Alva, like most northwest Oklahoma school districts, receives more funds from county tax collections than the average school district in the state because the local assessor has lots of expensive oilfield equipment to assess. Two-thirds the districts...
Two of the Woods County commissioners, John Smiley and David Hamil, said at the Monday county commissioner meeting they plan on running for re-election. Later, an inquiry to County Assessor Renetta Benson and County Treasurer David Manning revealed that they also plan to run for their offices again. The filing period is Wednesday, April 11, through Friday, April 13, at the county election board office in the Professional Building on Fourth Street in Alva. In all Oklahoma counties, the county assessor, country treasurer and districts 1 and 3...
Superintendent James Miller told the Freedom Board of Education that the pay raises for teachers and support personnel will impact the general fund of the school district by about $105,000 next year. He said the district carryover will be $830,000 so there will be no short-term problems meeting this. He did say that he met with the entire staff and explained the need to save on whatever possible. Miller said the State Legislature is in full swing and praised both Rep. Newton and Sen. Murdock for their willingness to listen and take his calls....

Superintendent Donna Anderson discussed the teacher walkout and pay raise events of the past three weeks with the Cherokee Board of Education Monday night. “I've been asked when I think this walkout will be over, and I don't have the answer to that,” she said. “I'm not sure where the line is – where no more will be done, and where more needs to be done, so more funds go to our kids in the classroom. It is a historic time in Oklahoma,” she said. The superintendent said because the Cherokee School District is not on the school funding formula b...
Thousands of teachers flooded the Capitol last week, filling our halls and our offices as they lobbied for more education funding. As hectic as it was, I really enjoyed the conversations I had with teachers both inside and outside of House District 58. Civil engagement is a worthy cause. Talking to your representative helps us be better lawmakers. And though I wish we were all rallying in celebration, I am thankful for the opportunity to discuss possible solutions with so many educators on the front lines for education. It has been very...
As a Kansas town bordering Oklahoma, Kiowa was one of the starting points of the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893. Like other border towns, Kiowa had days of celebrations for the centennial in 1993. It’s hard to fathom that another 25 years has passed and 2018 marks the 125th Anniversary of the Land Run. On Sept. 16, 1893, some 100,000 people raced to claim six million acres of land in former Indian Territory in Oklahoma. On that very first day historians report that 40,000 homesteads were claimed. The New York Times had billed the Land Run o...
Let's just say that my sister, Jennifer Schubert-Akin, is determined, pursues and achieves excellence in most all that she does. For example, she's a 1975 graduate of Burlington High School where she was valedictorian, at OU was outstanding senior of fine arts, is co-founder and CEO of the Steamboat Institute that celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year, and has been married to Rick for 37 years this May. It didn't surprise me that while running her 23rd consecutive Boston Marathon last April...
