  • The fundamental fact of Christianity

Max Ridgway, Grace and Faith Fellowship|Mar 16, 2018

Many Christians begin to feel anxious, insecure and confused due to a failure to keep in mind some fundamental facts about the nature of Christianity. The first fact is that it’s all about Christ, it’s not about you. Paul confirms this when he writes, “By grace you are saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.” When Paul writes, “not of yourselves,” he means that salvation (your relationship with God) is not something you produce, earn or even maintain. Christianity, as the name implies, is all about Christ and...

  • Grief support group to begin at First Presbyterian April 15

    Sarah Chivington-Buck|Mar 16, 2018

“Are you over it yet?” How many of you have been asked that question after the death of a loved one? The grief that comes with losing someone is not something we “get over.” The pain may decrease in intensity over the years, it becomes something we learn to live with, but the death of someone close to us changes us. Grief does not progress through nice, neat stages, but unfolds differently for each person. As we journey through the wilderness of grief, we need companions. We need people who will patiently support us, allowing each of us to g...

  • Spiritually Speaking

    W. Jay Tyree, College Hill Church of Christ|Mar 16, 2018

Many moons ago, in the year 6bb (before Becky), I was a young, strong, good-looking boy of 17 – since I’m writing this column, and no witnesses have come forward to refute my assessment, we’ll just accept the above description as fact and move along. As a student at North Mesquite High School (Stomp ‘em Stallions!), I was surrounded by young, strong, good-looking girls of roughly the same age – this assessment is not subject to question, as these girls were all Texans and all Texas girls are, by definition, good-looking. However, as it turns...

  • Fake news

    Arden Chaffee|Mar 16, 2018

Yellow journalism: Noun: “journalism that is based upon sensationalism and crude exaggeration.” Occasionally used in the last century to sell newspapers, it was a precursor to the fake news we encounter today. There is a difference in misinterpretation and blatant manipulation of facts hoping to gain political influence. From an article in Popular Science, “As partisans, pundits and even governments weaponize information to exploit our regional, gender and ethnic differences,” we find ourselv...

  • Carl's Capitol Comments

    Rep. Carl Newton|Mar 16, 2018

News of a possible teacher “walkout” is everywhere these days: I start off nearly every morning reading the most recent developments, and spend a lot of the day considering possible alternatives that are possible to generate the needed money for a teacher pay raise. I truly appreciate the frustration that the teachers are experiencing – knowing a teacher pay raise has been talked about for the last few years yet none has been delivered. I also know many state employees have gone years without a...
