About this time last year I was preparing for an Ash Wednesday service and trying to teach my then 6-year-old son about that day on the church calendar. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a season of preparation before Easter. On that day, many Christians gather together to offer songs and prayers of confession and to receive ashes, an ancient symbol of repentance, in the shape of a cross on their foreheads. As I talked with my son about this practice he said, "Do you put ashes on everyone?" I got this mental image of me walking down main...
This week we will go back to the Old Testament and read the first 21 chapters of Exodus. At the end of Genesis Jacob and his sons were reunited with Joseph in Egypt. Jacob and his sons came to Egypt during a famine in search of grain and offered themselves to be Pharaoh’s servants in exchange for a place to live. Exodus begins 430 years later, a few Egyptian leaders have lived and died and the current Pharaoh does not remember Joseph and what he did for Egypt. The Israelites are no longer servants, they are slaves. There are so many of them tha...

In a time of uncertainty and frustration, I want to reassure you that Oklahoma is making good progress in distributing Covid-19 vaccine to those who need it most. While we remain hopeful in this progress, let me be clear about one thing – it is not enough. We must continue to push to get more vaccine into our state and to Oklahomans. Over the past couple weeks, Oklahoma has consistently been ranked among the top 10 states for vaccine distribution. As of Feb. 1, over 647,000 Oklahomans have registered for the vaccine and over 130,000 a...
After a successful decade as a punter and holder for place kickers for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL), Hunter Smith was traded in 2009 to the Washington Redskins. When his new “special teams” coach touted him as perhaps the “best holder” in football, Smith had to endure some good-hearted ribbing from his fellow athletes. But he also faced some more pointed criticism from kickers and holders from other teams. For one thing, Indianapolis played its games in a domed s...
If you follow international news, you know that Great Britain has been planning to leave the European Union since 2016. Brexit, as it came to be called, finally took place on Dec. 31 last year. Great Britain feels that its exit will “reassert its sovereignty and renew its role as a global force.” It will never regain the empire of 100 years ago but its ties to the United States grow stronger in the face of threats from China, Iran, North Korea and rogue states throughout the world. Bri...

After losing a string of four games, the Alva Goldbugs won on Senior Night against the Tonkawa Buccaneers 55-32. The Bucs are struggling and came into the game with a 1-8 record while Alva was 9-9. The Tonkawa girls were unable to play due to Covid, and there wasn't enough time to arrange for another opponent for the Ladybugs. Sophomore Kyler Penco was hot at the hoop in the first half, scoring 14 points to lead the Goldbugs while Jackson Feely was having a good night on the boards. At the end o...
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A new Brazilian variant of the coronavirus has been confirmed in Oklahoma in a woman with a history of out-of-state travel, state health officials said Friday. State epidemiologist Jared Taylor says the Brazil P.1 variant was detected in a woman who is no longer infectious and that at least one member of the woman's household also tested positive for the coronavirus. The Brazilian variant was first detected in the U.S. last month contains a set of mutations that may affect its ability to be recognized by antibodies, a...
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma City police say an officer fatally shot a man who opened fire on officers as they investigated a report of an armed person who had a mental illness. The shooting happened at about 11 p.m. Thursday. Police had initially said officers were responding to reports of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, two officers found Tilford Barton, 30, armed and trying to hide behind a tree, police Capt. Dan Stewart said Friday. "They (officers) were giving him commands so they could see him and the subject started shooting at t...
ENID, Okla. (AP) — Several earthquakes, including one of magnitude 4.2, one 3.7 magnitude and one 3.5 magnitude, were recorded Friday in northern Oklahoma by the Oklahoma Geological Survey. The quakes were recorded southeast of Enid, about 95 miles (153 kilometers) north of Oklahoma City. No injuries or damage were reported, according to Garfield County Emergency Management Director Mike Honigsberg. Thousands of earthquakes have been recorded in Oklahoma in recent years, many linked to underground injection of wastewater from oil and gas p...
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Supreme Court is allowing an Oklahoma-based tribe to intervene in a lawsuit by a Mississippi company over a casino license in Pope County. The court on Thursday overturned a prior ruling by Circuit Judge Tim Fox and allows Cherokee Nation Businesses of Catoosa, a subsidiary of the Cherokee Nation, to intervene in the lawsuit, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Fox previously denied the tribe permission to intervene in the legal action by Mississippi-based Gulfside Casino Partnership against the s...
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — After only their first few weeks of work, tensions already are high among lawmakers meeting in-person at some state capitols — not because of testy debates over taxes, guns or abortion, but because of a disregard for coronavirus precautions. In Georgia, a Republican lawmaker recently was booted from the House floor for refusing to get tested for the coronavirus. In Iowa, a Democratic House member boldly violated a no-jeans rule to protest the chamber's lack of a mask rule. And in Missouri, numerous lawmakers and sta...
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly's administration plans to begin giving COVID-19 vaccinations to Kansas prison inmates next week, ignoring a call from the Republican-controlled Legislature to postpone their inoculations so that others can get them first. Spokesperson Carol Pitts said in an email that the Department of Corrections has not yet vaccinated any inmates but would start giving them throughout its nine facilities. Her email Thursday came as the Kansas Senate was debating a resolution condemning Kelly's decision to make i...
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said Friday that both she and her husband had fraudulent claims for unemployment benefits filed in their names with the state. The Democratic governor's disclosure to reporters came amid an increasingly intense focus by the Republican-controlled Legislature on bogus unemployment claims and ongoing criticism of the state Department of Labor's operations. The department has seen claims from jobless workers and bogus ones spike at times during the COVID-19 pandemic, including since late November. The sta...
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican Sen. Roger Marshall has received the Senate Agriculture Committee seat that he told Kansas voters he would get if they elected him. The freshman senator also received seats on the Senate's energy, small business and health and education committees. The Agriculture Committee has long been a key assignment for Kansas senators because of the industry's importance to the state. Marshall was a two-term western Kansas congressman when he ran for the Senate last year, and he played up his service on the House A...
HOLTON, Kan. (AP) — A Holton man has been sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison for the shooting death of his father in 2018. Derrick Bohnenkemper, 50, was sentenced Friday for the killing of Gaylen Bohnenkemper, 73, at the family's home, WIBW reported. He pleaded no contest in December to second-degree murder. He was also sentenced to three years of post-relief supervision and must register as a violent offender. Authorities said the victim was shot in the head while he was in bed. Derrick Bohnenkemper's mother called 911 and was able to e...
