Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018, marked a first for Alva and Oklahoma. The Vera Mae Home was officially opened. The Vera Mae Home is the first in a series of homes built for sibling groups in foster care to be placed with foster parents in a newly built home. Dr. Colleen Golightly, a Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU) associate professor of education, shared about her time teaching abroad. Dr. Golightly has recently returned from teaching English in Venezuela. Golightly, before teaching in Venezuela, taught at the NWOSU Enid campus; now, she is back at NWOSU, but in Alva. Alex Mantz welcomed community attendees to the August Alva Chamber Community Coffee, hosted Friday by the Homestead and Kelly Parker in the month of their 20th year of operations. Parker went on to talk about the Homestead's beginnings and recent renovations and changes. The Alva Chamber of Commerce Community Coffee was hosted at Northwest Family Services of Oklahoma. Brenda Hood spoke in place of Alex Mantz. Hood told the group that Northwest Family Services is in the process of writing grants. They have several funding sources they are working with for those grants since they are a non-profit. Northwest Family Services is gearing up for the start of school soon. They provide services at the local area school as well as at their offices in Alva, Cherokee and Fairview. City Manager Joe Don Dunham led the discussion, qualifying that since the fiscal year has yet to be audited, numbers may change a bit. As of June 2018, Alva Recreation complex (ARC) has $719, 503 in revenue, $827,833 expended, $23,676 encumbered to be spent, $124,755 in the bank, and investments of $413,317.
