    On May 4 and 5, the Alva High School vocal program competed at the tri-state vocal contest in Enid. AHS brought their songs from district and state choir contests. Solos, ensembles, a jazz choir and Electric Gold also performed. There were many soloists and students who took part in ensembles, and a lot of them received superior ratings while some received excellent.     On May 9, Alva high and middle schools had their annual spring concert. The middle school treble, mixed and tenor/bass choirs performed the songs they performed at districts. The AMS Tenor/Bass chorus sang “Open Road” by Laura Farnell and “Sailors' Life for Me” by Mary Donelly. The Alva Middle School Mixed Chorus sang “Laudate Dominum” by Tomas Luis De Victoria and “Who Has the Wind?” arranged by Douglas Wagner.     On May 1, Alva High School students went to the high school office and called and thanked anyone who contributed to the Alva Goldbug Education Foundation either by memorial, donation, scholarship or membership. They call this a “Thank a Thon.” The students were fed pizza and brownies for their hard work. If the people they called had any questions, the students answered them.     On Easter Eve, Alva’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) placed filled Easter eggs in front yards around the community of Alva to help bring excitement to younger kids on Easter morning. The students delivering the eggs did not ring doorbells or knock, but left a confirmation that the eggs had been placed in the yard. “I am so excited to be doing this, I think it’ll be a fun experience and hopefully we make the kids’ day,” commented FCA leadership team member Maya Stewart.     Every month the Alva Rotary Club picks two students, a boy and a girl, from Alva High School as Students of the Month. These students are chosen because they show great leadership skills and citizenship. The students of the month for March are Ally Riley and Rafferty Brown.     On March 8, Alva High School’s Band of Gold and Electric Gold (EG) visited the elementary schools for Music In Our Schools Month. The students went to explain how incredible the music program is and how enjoyable it is if you love music.     On Feb. 21, Alva High School choir went to compete at the district contest at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The high school took a mixed choir, treble choir and tenor/bass choir, along with solos, ensembles and duets. The tenor/bass choir received excellent ratings in performance and sight reading.     Alva High School Electric Gold went around town Tuesday, Feb. 14, delivering Singing Valentines.     Alva High School yearbooks are now on sale. Students can bring money to school or order their yearbook online at jostensyearbooks.com. This year, students can personalize their yearbooks, but personalization cannot be added for orders after March 1. The regular yearbook, which includes one clear protective cover and one photo pocket, is $40.     Alva High School (AHS) wore blue for Blad on Monday, Jan. 24. Bladimir Mesta, 17, of Hooker, passed away on Friday, Jan. 20, due to a pedestrian/car accident on Thursday, Jan. 19. Blad was a cross country runner at Hooker High School. AHS also had a fundraiser for the Mesta family where students could pay $1 to wear a hat for a day.     Sophomore of the Year is an award presented by the local Kiwanis Club. It is given to one local outstanding high school sophomore each year. All sophomores are eligible to apply and are not required to be members of Key Club.     In the summer of 2016, the kitchen in the Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) room was remodeled. The old kitchen in the Alva High School FACS room was first installed in the early 70s. The only renovation ever made was this summer.
