    TIM REYNOLDS and JOE REEDY|Jul 24, 2024

The NBA signed its 11-year media rights deal with Disney, NBC and Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday after saying it was not accepting Warner Bros. Discovery's $1.8 billion per year offer to continue its longtime relationship with the league. The media rights deals were approved by the league's Board of Governors last week and will bring the league about $76 billion over those 11 years. WBD had five days to match a part of those deals and said it was exercising its right to do so, but its offer was not considered a true match by the NBA. That...

  • Oklahoma has big 3rd quarter to advance over Portland, 85-63

    JOE REEDY|Mar 19, 2023

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Oklahoma is best known for having the nation's second-highest scoring offense. It was the Sooner's physicality on defense and ability to control the paint though that allowed them to advance over Portland in the NCAA Tournament. Fifth-seeded Oklahoma outrebounded Portland by 16 and held the No. 12 seed Pirates to 37.7% percent shooting from the field in an 85-63 victory Saturday night in a first-round game. "We like to establish the paint. That's one of our main focuses on the offensive and defensive end. Just being a...

  • Supreme Court paved way for shifting college TV landscape

    JOE REEDY|Aug 26, 2022

Andy Coats isn't a coach or athletic director. When it comes to the seismic changes to the landscape of major college football, though, he is a seminal figure. Coats, the former dean of the University of Oklahoma law school, successfully argued before the Supreme Court in 1984 that the NCAA's control of football television rights violated federal antitrust law. Justice Byron "Whizzer" White, a former running back at Colorado, told Coats back then that even though he may end up winning the case, he would regret it. "I never did exactly regret...

  • Enhanced crowd audio adds another dimension to fanless games

    JOE REEDY|Jul 5, 2020

There's clearly a huge difference between an English Premier League match and one played between friends on a local field. But when you take away 54,000 fans who would otherwise be singing and cheering at Liverpool's Anfield, both sound the same. That doesn't seem appropriate to Pierre Moossa, NBC's coordinating producer for Premier League coverage. He is one of those who have embraced adding crowd noise to telecasts with games being played in empty stadiums due to the coronavirus pandemic. "All the different sports are trying to find ways to...

He has been the lead college basketball producer for 12 years and has produced the Women's Final Four since 1995. He also has produced ESPN's Saturday night college football games. Dean will work alongside Jimmy Platt, who was named MNF's new director in 2019. Stephanie Druley, ESPN's vice president of production, said it was important to stagger the producer and director moves in order to keep...

  • Familiarity helped Harris Jr., Bulaga choose Chargers

    JOE REEDY|Apr 1, 2020

Chris Harris Jr. and Bryan Bulaga will be playing on different sides of the ball for the Los Angeles Chargers, but both cited a familiar trait about why they decided to sign with the team early in free agency — familiarity. Both players will be reuniting with their former position coaches. Defensive backs coach Ron Milus coached Harris Jr. during his first two seasons in the league (2011 and '12) in Denver while offensive line coach James Campen was Bulaga's coach from 2010 through '18 at Green Bay. Being reunited with Milus wasn't the only rea...

  • Romo remains with CBS after agreeing to long-term contract

    Joe Reedy|Mar 1, 2020

Tony Romo will remain with CBS as its top NFL analyst after agreeing to a record extension. CBS Sports spokeswoman Jen Sabatelle said that the network and Romo have agreed to a long-term contract. The New York Post reported that Romo's new deal is worth $17 million a year. If the former Dallas Cowboys star was still playing, that would make him the 17th highest-paid quarterback next season. CBS' deal with the NFL expires after the 2022 season, but Romo's contract goes beyond that. CBS is expected to retain their rights when the next round of ne...

    Joe Reedy|Sep 15, 2019

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Lincoln Riley and Jalen Hurts sent the Big 12 a message in fifth-ranked Oklahoma's 48-14 victory over UCLA on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. Despite 611 yards of offense — including 439 coming courtesy of Hurts — the Oklahoma coach and quarterback are far from satisfied going into an off week before opening conference play. "I think we're headed in the right direction," said Hurts, who became the first Oklahoma quarterback to pass for 200 yards and rush for 100 in the first half. "The intent for us is coming out and p...

  • Florida ban on smokable medical pot ruled unconstitutional

    JOE REEDY|May 25, 2018

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's ban that prevents medical marijuana patients from smoking the stuff has gone up in smoke. Leon County Circuit Court Judge Karen Gievers on Friday ruled that a state's ban on smokable cannabis is unconstitutional. Florida's Department of Health said in a statement it has appealed the ruling, which will impose an automatic stay. Gievers wrote in her 22-page ruling that Floridians "have the right to use the form of medical marijuana for treatment of their debilitating medical conditions as recommended by their c...

    JOE REEDY|Mar 25, 2018

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Gov. Rick Scott signed legislation Monday requiring backup power sources in Florida nursing homes and assisted living facilities, months after the deaths of several residents from a sweltering nursing home that lost power in a hurricane. The legislation require the facilities to have a generator capable of keeping nursing homes and assisted living facilities at 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) or lower for at least four days. All of Florida's 685 nursing homes and 3,089 assisted living facilities must be in c...

  • Pledge death, Greek life suspension to dampen FSU homecoming

    JOE REEDY|Nov 8, 2017

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State's suspension of all fraternities and sororities after a pledge's death dampens Greek life on campus just as it prepares for homecoming week. But one critic says more may be needed to change fraternity behavior. Douglas Fierberg, a Washington-based attorney who has pursued lawsuits over hazing deaths, says he's skeptical that suspensions go far enough, after Florida State became at least the third school to do so this year. The school suspended 55 fraternities and sororities Monday following the s...
