  • Eagle Times: Mother's Day

    Cora Vaughan|May 10, 2018

Mom. We all have a mom. For most people she is someone we respect and look up to. As we all know, Mother's Day is just around the corner on May 13. Anna Jarvis petitioned for Mother's Day to become a national holiday. Woodrow Wilson signing a proclamation in 1914 designating Mother's Day a national holiday on the second Sunday of May. We all celebrate Mother's Day differently from everyone else. Anna Jarvis's goal was not to turn Mother's Day into another greeting card holiday, but to get...

  • Eagle Times: Protect your hearing

    Cora Vaughan|May 10, 2018

Have you ever experienced the moment when you see someone's lips move but you're not quite sure what they said? Or perhaps you ask, "What?" four times to the same question, and finally just smile and nod in agreement, not knowing what you agreed to. Many people don't do anything to protect their hearing. They blare their music and work around loud machines, not realizing that once your hearing is gone it's not coming back without a great surgeon and money. This had been my reality since I was a...

  • Eagle Times: Walk in your own shoes

    Cora Vaughan|Apr 19, 2018

This past month the writing prompt on the board read, "If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?" I thought long and hard about it but I could not figure out for the life of me who I would trade places with; then it hit me. I don't want to trade places with anyone. Sure, trading places would let you walk a mile in someone else's shoes, but I don't believe I would want to do that. Everyone's life is different and everyone makes different choices that lead them to...

  • The Eagle Times: My biggest supporter

    Cora Vaughan|Mar 15, 2018

My biggest supporter is my mom. She never fails to show up for me. She is smart, funny and, most importantly, she is always there for me. When I told my mom I wanted to go into the military she supported me 100 percent. Even though she would much rather have me stay home and never go to war, she will support me no matter what. She comes to help me at stock shows and rodeos. My mom can't do everything she used to do but she still tries harder than anyone else. She's always been my favorite...

  • The Eagle Times: The process

    Cora Vaughan|Mar 15, 2018

There are over a million Americans enlisted as service members, with over 800,000 in the reserve components. Many people do not know what it takes to enlist. It is an extensive process but it is totally worth it if you have considered joining the armed forces. All the branches' requirements are a little different from one another, but it is still the same process. First, you will contact a recruiter and set up a meeting. You will do a lot of paperwork to get ready for a background check. If all...

A few weeks ago, Freedom Public School had a group of very special guests in the gym. Bruce Crevier & Family performed their famous "The Champions Forever Spin-Tacular Basketball Show." • Eagle Times: Oklahoma Horseshoeing School

    Cora Vaughan|Jan 18, 2018

About three years ago I decided I wanted to learn the back-breaking skill of horseshoeing. Six months ago I enrolled in the Oklahoma Horseshoeing School two week course. Over Christmas break I traveled to Purcell for the course. Every morning at 7 all of the students were in class receiving a lecture or a quiz on the leg or foot of the horse. On the first day of class by 10 a.m. I was putting my first shoe on a horse. It was extremely hard at first to remember all the steps. After the first day...

  • The Eagle Times: A world out of our reach

    Cora Vaughan|Nov 16, 2017

The year is 2117; I see the buildings are sky high with trash blowing around and all over the ground. My eyes and nose burn from the atrocious smell. As I look around for the source of the smell I wish I had never let my eyes wander. I see many people fighting over food and many kids with hunger in their eyes. I notice a lot of sleeping bags and thrown together shelters along alleyways. The lucky people were able to keep a house, but most of them still go to bed hungry from the lack of food...

    Cora Vaughan|Oct 19, 2017

This year's cross country season has been one for the books. Many people joined and remained on the team. One person got within five people of reaching his goal of going to state, Nate Wood. He ran in every cross country meet this season, making districts and regionals. Wood said that the run at regionals was fun. He also said it was excruciating running up and down hills and through water with 30 mile per hour wind blowing in his face. He finished his run with a time of 23 minutes and 15...

Schaaf will be 18 years old when she graduates from Freedom. After high school, she would like to attend college at Northwestern to study for her dream job of being a neonatal nurse. Her goal for the rest of the year is to study and try to pass all of her classes. Schaaf says she is proud of herself for stepping out of her comfort zone and moving to Oklahoma...

  • New Freedom Public School staff

    Cora Vaughan|Aug 31, 2017

This year, as you may know, we have many new teachers and staff here at Freedom Public School. There are two new elementary teachers. Teresa Kennedy is the new pre-K and kindergarten teacher. Kennedy came to Freedom from Alva. She graduated with a long list of majors from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. When Kennedy joined our small school, her son, who is in 10th grade, joined us as well. Another one of our new elementary teachers is Cindy Wilson. Wilson is the third- and fourth-grade...
